This partition is storage partition for Linux and Windows. It is an entire 40GB disk that is formatted as FAT32. It is a candidate for bad defragmentation as I will be writing and deleting often, sometimes small files. I am looking for my best option for keeping that partition healthy.

    1. What is the best free application that you know of?

    2. Which paid version do you think is the best and is it that much better than the freebie?

    Thanks,

    B.

I either use the built in version or Diskkeeper Lite. D Lite is the free version to Diskkeeper...

I'm still using the paid version of Diskeeper Pro 9.0.5, which is a couple of years old (current version is Diskeeper 2007).

The big advantage to the paid version is that it can be run in the background, so you never have to manually defrag your hard drive (although you could if you wanted to).

I concur with the previous two posters. Diskkeeper is your best bet.

    I would strongly recomend Vopt.

It is a program that not only defrag but also clean your system including the System retore that some times get too bulge and also other tools like system check disk for errors and network tools. It is chest of surprises, all for $40.You can try it for 30 days. Here is the web page address:

    An extremely good defragger

    Is AShampoo Magic Defrag 2.

It runs in the background and does an exceptionally good job. Once it has done the defrag, you can forget about it.

    Ashampoo® Magical Defrag 2 (v2.08, 02/15/2007)
    Fragmented hard disks are history.

    http://www.ashampoo.com/frontend/products/php/product.php?session_langid=2&idstring=0144

Price is good at less than $15 and this company makes some other great products. No I don't work for them but I do use their products

I use AusLogics Disk Defrag. It is fast, does a good job, and is free. You can find it here: http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/

    Questioning defagging

With the advent of the larger size PC drives, I once had the audacity to question one of the largest companies that sell defragmentation software. My question was on the amount of wear and tear on the drive to defrag it. My drive is a 320 GB and to defrag this drive takes one heck of a long time. Now I have it partitioned into 5 sections and I use one section or partition to store all changing data such as Spreadsheets, Documents and pictures and most other irreplaceable data. This serves two purposes, one, it is easier to backup your files and two, because the data changes so often, it serves little purpose to defrag the partition because (NTFS) doesn't mess up as much as Fat32 and once the file is written, unless you open and modify it, it remains constant.

One of the other concerns is, to only run one companies software because the alogorithm and method they use are very different. One swears by moving all your main files to one portion of the disk but with newer faster drives, I question that this is much value. But moving files is extremely time consuming. All you want to really do is unfragment a file. Once a DLL file is corrected there is very little reason to mess with it again.

I question that defrag does little but make the software producers a lot of loot. Want to spend just a few dollars, go to pcmag and download Defrag-a-file which lets you just defrag some of you biggest files

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2073553,00.asp

If you belong to PCMAG And pay about $15 a year you can download a lot of the utilties for no extra cost.

Another intersting tidbit. I did a DOS level defrag using one of the most advertised programs and it took about 8 hours and then I started it and ran the windows part of the program and it said my drive was severely fragmented. I called them and asked them how this could be and after not getting a reasonable answer, I removed their software. Now it was called .. Oh oh, better be quiet here

    Enjoy

    Hi GordiBoy05,
Don't be shy ,give us some names :)
There is nothing slanderous about relating your experience with software or hardware and the companies that make it and naming names.
it's done everyday all over the internet in reviews etc.
As long as you're fair and not not malicious, you can tell your story anywhere.
