Just thought I'd share this ...after weeks of tinkering with freeware firewalls...finally found something for Win 9x ME users that really works...Filseclab...by simply adding one rule..Sheilds Up website reported the following ...

But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.

Also, 3% of system resouces ...no BSOD as was common with Zonealarm...
btw, was not sure where to post this...thought I'd try here

    Cheers
    Jake

Hi Hugh ...been a long time....how are things with you?

Just as a foot note here ..I did two things to get this working..

A: The version I downloaded was V2.5...used live update to get to V3.03

B: Added a new rule with following properties and made sure it was rule#1

    Application: (browser of your Choice)
    Remote: Anynet
    Direction: In
    Time: Anytime
    Protocol: TCP
    Action: Deny
This rule should be placed BEFORE your other browser app. rule which typically is: Anynet / All / Anytime / All / Pass.

it even passed the leak test ...

    Cheers

    it works!

Hi Jake, struggling here, ISP keeps cutting us off :( less than a minute when it's really bad; anything internet is an uphill struggle...

This firewall seems good ! :) well spotted - free, and it seems to do what's needed

(plus, the language pack is erm, wonderful - well I'm full of wonder  oddly, you can work out what they mean perfectly well most of the time)

I unchecked the "automatically trust microsoft software" box, so that I could do my own rules, as opposed to the "carte blanche" approach

One gripe - it's trying to put me on line every time when Windows starts up, up comes Dialup Networking. I've tried looking through the various settings to see whether this can be prevented, but not found a way yet. Anyone have any ideas?

    best wishes, HJ

    Hugh ...two things..

    1) Click Start >Programs>Filseclab>Filseclab Messenger .....there is an option to auto start their messenger service

2)also at main panel...click "Live Update" ...there is a settings button ..you'll find settings for how often or if it should automaticly check for updates...

One of those is likely the culprit

    Cheers
