    Hi Joe

Besides dumping Symantec?? Would speedup the whole computer by a large magnatude.

Better answer for this = Comodo Firewall and AVG or Comodo Antivirus, altho there are several other good virus scanners.

Problem is it takes some work to just get rid of Symantec. Add/Remove alone don't do it.

OK on with some things you can do without the above.

DNS Client is unneeded by most users and can be a big slowdown of boot.

    start-run
    type (or paste from here)
    services.msc

Scroll down to DNS Client set it "Disabled"

    Cleanup

    Download and run
    ATF-Cleaner
    http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
when run check select all run twice or more until nothing else found

    Download install and run
    DCleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/DCleaner_d4790.html
Check all boxes delete all found, this will get what ATF-Cleaner misses

    then

    CCleaner
    get the slim version
    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx
Click bottom right Run Cleaner twice then in left panel click "Issues" then below "Scan for issues" run twice or until no more found

Download and install but do not run
    EasyCleaner http://personal.inet.fi/business/ton...s/EClea2_0.exe

Drag mouse and hilight the next line including the quote at the beginning.
Once highlighted rt click and chose copy

"C:\Program Files\ToniArts\EasyCleaner\EasyClea.exe" -delreg -delunn -ccache -chistory -ccookies -cmru -exit

    then

    Start-Run
    type
    CMD
    hit enter or click ok
in the command window that opens

    rt click an chose paste
    hit enter

When it finishes close the command window.

After this reboot (do the below only after completeing the above)

    D/L RunScanner
    http://www.runscanner.net/runscanner.zip

Unzip and run it. Post the log back.

RunScanner gives us everythinh HijackThis does plus much, much more.
Since you HJT log shows us no real malware this will show us deeper info as for malware.

But it also will give us deep additional info on what is running.

    Need help from this point

    Bob,

I have done everything up to this point: Download and install but do not run
    EasyCleaner http://personal.inet.fi/business/ton...s/EClea2_0.exe

Drag mouse and hilight the next line including the quote at the beginning.
Once highlighted rt click and chose copy

"C:\Program Files\ToniArts\EasyCleaner\EasyClea.exe" -delreg -delunn -ccache -chistory -ccookies -cmru -exit

    then

    Start-Run
    type
    CMD
    hit enter or click ok
in the command window that opens

    rt click an chose paste
    hit enter

The easy cleaner shows up in a different language that I don't inderstand.

    Any help here? Thanks

    Hello Joe,

Read this post http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=39425 on startups and seach the data bases for info on your startups.

Look up the Sony "update" software and the HP photo programs, they are non essential and can be invoked on demand instead of starting at bootup.

    Regards - Charles

My years of experience and outright AGGRAVATION have proven to me that the LESS loaded at atartup the better the overall preformance.

The less loaded at startup also helps to keep down mem usage and conflicts

My wife complained about a problem with her machine. When I checked it out I fiund that the Nieces & Nephews from next door had OVERLOADED the thing with downloads. And had also added a few things to the startup list.

In my 75 year old thinking, a PC is no different than a Pickup truck. They are both built to handle only so much and if we try to overload them we can be in BIG trouble.

Smaller loads may mean more trips but at the same time a longer, smoother riding and much happier life.

    Over and OUt
    BillyBob

    Good morning Joe

Good job on doing the proceedure.

Good news no sign of malware. System looks clean.

But it is loaded with a lot of autoloading processes. But I say again the worst here is Symantec.

But how about some details on what happened after you did all of the last post.

First how long was the startup, did it improve any after doing all and restarting?

Did you notice anything else after reboot? Did system seem a little snappier in general?

    Some details!

I was going to advise Startup Control panel but see Charles's link includes this and is better, go thru those.

And the wisest man on this BBS BillyBob puts your problem in laymans terms.

But before you make any changes in Charles's link do the below.

    OK to continue.

    Start-run
in the window that opens copy and paste each line below to the command prompt and hit enter

    netsh interface ip delete arpcache

    ipconfig /flushdns

    ipconfig /release *

    ipconfig /renew *

    ipconfig /registerdns

    nbtstat -RR

    Reboot

Next build a batch/cmd file to get a events log

copy the next 3 lines for paste

    @echo off
    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system32\psloglist -x -f -s System > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop "\Events.log
    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system32\psloglist -x -f -s Application >> "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop "\Events.log

    then

    open notepad

    and paste these 3 lines

    then click File-Save As
    at top Save in
    chose Desktop

at bottom Save As Type select All Files
    in File name put
    Events.cmd
    then click save

There will be a new Icon on Desktop Events.cmd

Do not run it yet. Requires below to run.

D/L the below unzip and extract them to C:\windows\system32
    http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/PsTools.zip

We need to see the events that are recorded after a boot so do the below.
In order to see only the events that occured on boot we need to clear all the event logs.

copy the next line for paste

    eventvwr.msc

    then
    start-run
    paste the above

    The event viewer will open
in the left panel rt click and "Clear all events" no need to save, on each Catagory

    Close all

    Reboot

    do nothing else
    Dbl click Events.cmd

After that there will be an Events.log icon on the Desktop. Open it post it back to me.

This log should show only events that occured after we cleared them and should show us any problems occuring on shutdown and startup.
This may point us to any other slow boot problems

    Bob

    Computer Snappier During Start Up

    Bob,

My computer took approx. 34 secs to fullu start up wheras the hour glass went away. It definitetly is snappier during start up. I even removed Symantec and replaced it with Comodo Antivrus. Not sure if I was successful in completely removing symantec. I wasn' able to do this:
D/L the below unzip and extract them to C:\windows\system32
    http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/PsTools.zip
. The link comes up to a page that doesn't show anything. Everything else is looking good so far. I really appreciate your help!

    Mr JoeB

Am new here just looking at new posts.

I have been using RunScanner for some times and it is a#1.

Your scan looks Ok to me also.

But I did notice that bobins made and error in the batch file. Probably forgot to put them in the command line.

He left out the we switch. To work the following will work.

copy the next 3 lines for paste

    @echo off
    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system32\psloglist -x -f we -s System > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop "\Events.log
    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system32\psloglist -x -f we -s Application >> "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop "\Events.log

Thanks bobin I can use this.

    Good Morning to all.

I was just sittin here with my first cup of coffe and looking thru things trying to find something to do, In going over my pervious reply and other parts of this post I don't see ( or missed ) something.

I mentioned befroe about the number of things running but I see not mention of another sometimes big/HUGH problem. That being COMBINATIONS I can 100% vouch for that from having several different machines and years of TRIAL & ERROR. One unit may run A and B together but the other may not. One machine may run A and then B separately. But the other machine may not run B after A without REBOOTING. ( I NEVER DID figure that one out ) I just worked with it.

    Question.
Do these new thought by me go right back to possible OVERLOADING/TRYING to do too much at once again ? Or just more of my wild ideas.

    Have a nice day.

    JoeB,

You can eliminate those 1517 Warning messages by installing the User Profile Hive Cleanup that MS offers. It works well for me.

This won't fix any start-up speed problem that you may have but it's a good idea to implement it nonetheless, in view of your Event Log warnings.
