For some inexplicable reason, i cannot get sound on my pc. the only sounds it makes are the notification sounds, like error etc. If I play a audio cd, i cannot hear anything, or if i play a DVD nothing happens...it is like watching a silent movie.
more than likely I have done something, but what? Can anyone help me rectify this problem?

    Thank you.

toetapping - Welcome to the Board :)

You'll need to pad out some detail here - some basic questions ....

Have you ever had sound from your CD/DVD player?

Have you checked the audio connections from the CD/DVD player - this will either be a small lead from the back of the player to the motherboard or, if a later unit the 80 core ribbon cable which carries the audio signal too..

In Device Manager - right click on the CD/DVD drive > Properties > Properties tab - is the volume control set up and is the check box checked (screenshot)

Also in Device Manager is the drive flagged with a red or yellow flag?

I don't think this is relevant as you can hear System Sounds, but you have checked that the sound is not muted?

Thank you for such a quick reply. What I ended up doing was:-

Went to My Computer select the c.d. rom in question.
    Right clicked and selected properties.
    Selected hardware and properties again.
    Clicked on driver
    Clicked uninstall then O.K.
    Re-Boot P.C.

To my surprise it work and I can enjoy my music again.
