    Bob:
I am sorry about not responding sooner but it was grandson's graduation time. Naturally that took priority over everything.
I ran the tests you described. After typing in "diskmgmt.msc" In response I see the three partitions used in this computer. Namely (with my assigned names)

    C
    Data(D)
    WorkArea(E)

This agrees with what I see in WINDOWS EXPLORER.

As you asked I then went back to RUN and typed in "cmd" followed by "net use" and saw
    New condition will be remembered
There are no new entries in the list.

Looking at WINDOWS EXPLORER, after all this, still present were the
    Drive(D)
    DVD Drive(F)
    DVD RW Drive(R)

The problem Drives Drive(F) abd Drive(D) were there.

    Any further suggestions?

    Yes!

TonyT is correct about Virtual CD drives that is what we are going to try to find out.

    Lets correct the drive labels

Put a readable CD in your DVD Drive. Windows Cd or music whatever, but not blank

    Start-Run
    type
    cmd
in the command window that opens

    type
    cd\
    hit enter

    type
    dir \windows
    enter

if you get a dos directory of windows here this confirms it is your bootable windows C drive so

    type
    label
    enter

if it is not labeled C then
    put in C
    hit enter

    Now
    d:
    enter

    type
    cd\

    enter
    dir

Are these the files that agree with windows as your D drive?

    Type
    Label
    enter

if this is Your D drive and the label don't agree then put D as the label and hit enter.

    Now

    type
    e:

    type
    dir

Are these the files that agree with windows as your E drive?

if this is Your E drive and the label don't agree then put E as the label and hit enter.

Now for the below watch for CD drive access

    type
    F:

    type
    dir

Are these the files that agree with windows as your F drive or do you get a directory of you CD?

    If it is empty

    try copying something to it

    copy c:\ntdetect.com
    hit enter

it will work or report Read only disk

let me know the results "details" of all of this "

    D/L http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptdinfo.asp

Run it select copy to clipboard and paste back to us.

    Bobert:

    I followed your instructions.
The C, D, and E partition information was as Windows Explorer indicated.

When it came to the F drive after typing "dir" I got the following message
"The device is not ready "
    The result of executing
    copy c:\ntdetect.com
    was
    c:\ntdetect.com
The system cannot find the file specified
    0 file(s) copied

When I ran the Karen program the only way Here is the result of pasting the clipboard copy.

    Now what coach?

Remember there is a "folder" in the C partition with the name Drive(D)
which I cannot remove. This is the real problem. I can understand where Drive(F) is a virtual drive....but it is trying to get rid of that Drive(D) in C that bugs me.

    Hi David

Sorry so late getting back. Had a problem with my email and my ISP!

    Any way reread entire thread.

You never said what you get if you just dbl click this D folder. Does it open?

If so does it have files? While open can you drag or copy a file there?

Give me the exact name under the Icon.

You had e-mail problem....it's always something isn't it?
Anyway, the folder's designation is "Drive(D) ". This is exactly how it appears in WINDOWS EXPLORER with the same indent as all the other folders in this C drive.
Double clicking on it brings up a blank right hand side window. I had cleaned out all the files in preparation of getting rid of this "folder ".

Yes, you can drag a file into this folder. I currently dragged one file into this folder. I left that one file there.

Ya go anything else in mind to identify why I can't delete this folder?

    Bobert:

That did it. I took ownership of the folder and got rid of it. In so doing, of course I learned a bit more about this furshlugenheh WINDOWS XP system.
One more question. Before deleting the folder I went back to WINDOWS EXPLORER-> TOOLS->FOLDER OPTIONS->VIEW and put the checkmark back in
"Use simple file sharing" Is this the right way to do things?

Or should I go back over the entire process and make Administrator have ownership of this OS?

In other words how should I leave this system? Is my ownership OK to work with?

And many, many thanks for this one. I hope others have derived some knowledge from this interchange.

As I said in the other thread:

    Leave the other stuff alone.

Good luck with the furshlugenheh system!
