When you try to install, do the lights in your bathroom flicker or do the tires on your car go flat?

Or, instead of us trying to guess, maybe you could provide more info:)

    IE7 won't install

I have read and tried most advice on how to install IE7
and listing them here would be an endless task.
I had hoped to hear from someone that had a hard time
and found something unique such as a special registry
entry or something that isn't written on the internet advice.
I have turned off all antivirus, and anti spyware programs, pop
up stoppers and even resorted to removing all antivirus
and anti spyware software. I did not turn off my firewall.
Suggestions for what to try would be helpful.
And yes at 84 years old, my lights do flickerand I am forgetful
at times but I still do my own typing. I am convinced there are
others that can't get it to install and have followed my path by
installing firefox. IE6 which I have used for quite some time is
showing it's age. I even tried Opera and it is better.

Can't remember the exact words, it says IE 7 was not installed and then provides a file on my desktop which is a trouble shooter. When clicked on it takes me to a web site of recommended things to try. This microsoft site has
    several possible fixes.
I have been painfully through most of them and they didn't fix the problem.
I did not write down or bookmark the site. Microsoft does recognize there are
installation problems and tries to solve them. Prior to installation they suggest
several actions, such as turn of spy ware, empty the cache etc and etc.
This is the first download I couldn't simply click on and have it download and
    install a program.

hawkeye, sorry about the lights flickering comment....We always need as much info as possible:cool:

Are you getting IE7 from the Windows Update site or somewhere else? If from the update site, you might try this one:

Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP SP2

I had been working from the windows update site

I tried the site you suggested and!

    It did not install and gave me the following message;

Internet Explorer installation did not comple
and "restart and after, click the IE trouble shooting shortcut.

This is the same message I have been getting.

I was intrested in install and hopefully have the replacement for
    IE6
It apparently ain't gonna happen, so at this point I will stay with Mozilla Firefox which was a very easy install and is working very well.
Thanks for your efforts, I am now discontinuing my efforts, which have been
    considerable to install IE7.

    Hawkeye:

C'mon now - you have to admit the flickering lights and flat tires was a pretty funny line for those poor souls among us trying to figure out just why you are having trouble. We all have to laugh at ourselves once in a while.

Your level of experience is listed as "experienced" so I'll give it a shot from that perspective. Download the installation file to a folder and then extract the contents to another folder using WinRAR. Instead of double clicking the setup executable, go to the update folder and double click the update executable and follow the prompts. You also want to install (double click) the executables referenced as "idndl" and "nlsdl" in the Update folder. If you dont see the tabs after you've installed IE7, open xmllitesetup to turn the tabs on.

    ;)

    Ie7

    Thanks for your continued interest
Your comment did not bother me
I have followed your instructions and again it
    did not install.
Have rechecked permissions and they are ok.

Checked the install log and found this; 4.641: The configuration registry key could not be written.
4.641: Internet Explorer 7 installation did not complete.
    4.641: Update.exe extended error code = 0x3f5

I am now using Opera and like it.
    I have also used Firefox
This in anticipation of IE6 being replaced by IE7

I do not lik IE7 for the simple reason an install should be easy to do and
this one is a bear and not worth the trouble

Please, do not waste any more of your and my time. I have already
spent several hours trying to resolve it and fortunately there are
other satisfactory solutions, such as opera.

    Thanks again, appreciate your response.

It's a problem with your registry permissions.

You could try fixing it, read This post
