Sorry I hadn't had a chance to respond Goddez1, it's been a horrendous week at work and I haven't had a chance to sit at my own computer.

Anyway, I removed the following from my startup:

    Office Startup
    Microsoft Find Fast
    Intervideo Wincinema Manager

I don't know which of these was the culprit, but I'm not going to press my luck and find out, either!

I'm happy this hunk of junk is still working!

    Go to www.purgeie.com
try to use the help contents to delete the files for you from dos....easy and safe. Get rid of index.dat files.

I have always thought this was a very efficient program since it will allow many types of deletions dealing with ie with one click. Also allows you to protect certain sites and cookies you regularly use.

    Well Hi again Ana,

Thanks for coming back with the name of those applications that, once stopped from startup or running in the background, have seemed to fix your problem.

Bad buggers, that they are, all three could have been the trouble maker as all are stealth mode multi-task worker-bees, invisibly running in the background and using resoures that may have bogged down or over taxed what you were currently doing. Your system, apparently, couldn't handle the combinaton of multi tasks. In other words IE was made to wait for it's share of IE read/write time while these other guys were hogging it. Office "FindFast" is infamous for being a big time resource hog and trouble maker.

I'm not sure what method you used to stop these guys, but some methods for stopping background apps seem to be temporary and like a boomer rang, they wind up back in the systray, chopping up and divying out the cpu time slices. If this should prove to be the case, please come back and inquire on a permanent disable method.

Again thanks for the update. :D

    ===================
NOTE*Without going back through all threads in this post and in light of your recent problem, one has to wonder if you wouldn't benefit by doing some cleanup maintenance that may put some more zip back into your OS routines. Things like:
    All tmp cleanouts
Elimination of unneeded files and applications
A check on the Fonts quantity
A SFC checker run [only looking for files flagged as corrupted]
Eliminating all unneededd background startup apps
    Eliminating all apps auto-updaters
Using some of the known Tweaks that speed up win98
Optimize options and adopt a safe routine for virus program
    A deletion of shelliconcache
A possible deletion win98 swap file
AN empty of recycle bin [both windows and protected bin if enable]
    An IE fix/repair run through
    An office fix/repair run thru
A safemode check in device manager, looking for duplicated listings.
and a wrap up round of scanreg/defrag

All of this can be time consuming but the benefits far outway any nuisance. Dirrections, advice and the gothcha's can be found for all these in the help-net archives and through help-nets front page tshoot category. Alternatively, a search engine of choice with keyword filters of win98 tweaks should offer some useful suggestions. [Most of the functions above are considered harmless or easily reversible, with proper backup, but as always do not perform anything considered to hazardous without a thorough knowledge of what you are doing and the options and steps needed to recover from from that unforeseen glitch. [System File Checker does require some understanding.]
