I resolved my problem (http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=64697) by restoring to a 5 day old restore point. However, there now remains a possibly related issue that System Restore does not work any more. It does fire up. But if I try to set a restore point it tells me, after I have named the intended point, and hit 'Create' that Windows is unable to create a restore point and to switch off my computer and try System Restore again. But this does not work.

In trying to resolve this I removed all previous restore points by toggling System Restore in My Computer Properties - so I cannot, anyway, restore to an earlier time. However, when I did have earlier restore points I found that, in addition to this specific problem, restoring to earlier points did not work either. Hitting 'restore' after selecting a point did nothing. No message, not even a 'hang' because I could cancel out - but System Restore did not work.

So now everything seems to be working well with the computer remembering its HKLM Software... Run settings - except System Restore is buggered, if you'll forgive the French.

No viruses, no Malware - I'm completely confident. Possibly overenthusiastic use of cCleaner at one stage, though might have originated all this. But sfc /scannow has not helped (did it ever help anything?) and using Zander's old suggestion of running regsvr32 jscript.dll also does not help (although it had worked wonders in 2005 when I had a different kind of System Restore problem).

I appreciate Moderator may wish to move this to a new thread - except I do suspect that everything is related...

Actually - don't respond anyone... I'm going to try reinstalling System Restore first.

...No reinstalling System Restore does not help

    System Restore Problem Resolved

For the first time ever sfc /scannow appears actually to have worked - or maybe it was just a coincidence. System Restore was able to create a restore point...

Good news - keep an eye on it though :)

System File Checker will only 'work' when there is a difference in System32 files vs the store in dll.cache (includes .sys files and some .exe, etc), which is updated as as when required when hotfixes, patches are installed. One of your system files was either corrupt or the wrong version.
