Suddenly I cannot log in to any of my usual websites using a secure connection (using https) but others (using http) log in normally. This means I cannot access any of the sites (such as on-line banking) in my "Personal toolbar folder" in my 'bookmarks'. Has one of my settings slipped?
I use Mozilla Firefox 22.003 under Windows XP SP2
How can I access my secure sites again?
    David :(

You must have Firefox2.0.0.3, and I have a question for you. When you say any, it must be two or more, right? I just made a payment on my Bank of America card, so I know that it is not a wholesale problem. By the way, the Bank of America has been the first site which has instituted identity theft protection, and I have to go through at least three passwords or questions. Now, all secure sites have begun some type of system, and, since a combination of username/password + something else is used, whatever was in the Personal Toolbar may not work, if it included saving a your info. There is a simple test.
Go to Tools|Options|Security|Show passwords. find the info for the specific account, and delete it. Now try again. You will have to enter your username/password, and, in most cases it should work.
One major exception the Chase bank. Their security system is unbelievable. They go according to their way of noticing changes in the computer, on the theory that if you use the same computer you will be the real mccoy. For them, deleting cookies, doing any updates to the browser or OS is a change in computer, so I have to call, and ask to reset my info. Four times in two months.
But, in general, I don't save username/passwords, and I just use the basic link in my Personal Toolbar, not the authenticated info. So, if your bookmark included the username/password, you will have to reenter it every time. This is true of this website, which I never exit, but, at least, in the morning I must enter the info. Another source of problems could be cookie management.
Essentially, I must do some extra work, but I feel more secure (except for the Chase bank site). If you login manually, and have accepted all cookies, I would not know.

    https won't work

Yes, everything that is personal such as Amazon, Tesco, Sainsburys, Accounts everywhere.
I cannot even get the sites, let alone have the oportunity to re-enter password etc. How can I get the log-on page? My bank details are not stored on the computer.

    David,

Do you also have this problem in IE? If so, you may want to check out this article from Microsoft. On that page there is a section to re-register .dll files. While looking around for a solution, I saw a couple instances where doing just that fixed the problem. maybe worth a look see.

Many thanks Mike. I have the same problem with IE and I've tried the advice given in the MS document (as far as possible - not everything they say appears on the menus), but no luck so far (using IE). Ill do it again and report back.

    I promised to report back.
Another test failed to resolve the problem: when another user logged in to my computer they couldn't login to my secure sites (not even as far as asking for MY passwords)
I now have another problem so I'll reload windows. My Norton virus scanner refuses to update..I've done a complete systems scan using last Friday's definitions and it didn't find anything

The Norton update failure should have something to do with the failure to login any secure sites. Do you have other Norton Security software, or what do you have for Firewall, and stuff like that?
I would disable first the Security software, and if necessary the AntiVirus. Norton has been known to act up at times.

https won't work nor will Norton Internet Security

I'm startng to think Norton might be the cause of the trouble. All my Norton settings have spontaneously changed -- including my access to the new settings. I cannot uninstall it nor re-install it. All the usual Norton programs have been disabled (including the firewall) and I cannot re-enable them. All I can do is a total system scan (and this didn't find anything).

Last week I had an anonymous e-mail asking me to send a receipt when my Norton had been disabled. I ignored it but is such a thing known? I thought it was a joke but now wonder.

You have posted in the wrong forum :(
You have downloaded HJT from TrendMicro - this version is in beta. Please download v1.99.1 from the link I gave - Quicklinks in my signature, in the LH column on Radiospace and run again and post in your other thread in the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.

Since Norton is, usually, supported, I would ask them for help.
They should know if this behavior is known. Just go to the website. I don't know if you have to login.
