I am having problems with my computer running very slow. In the Windows Task Manager it shows 99%-100% CPU usage. I am running 64 processes. The ones that seem to eat up my memory are svchost.exe and iexplore.exe.

I have ended svchost.ext and it does seem to help but still iexplore.exe still runs between 70 - 90 % when opening a new window or new tab. I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2. 1.73 Ghz with 1 Gb ram Dell Laptop. I also run McAfee antivirus protection. It is really annoying and would appreciate any suggestions to help get my system back up to speed. I will be running Ad-Aware after I post to see what comes up as well.
I don't think I should disable svchost but this does seem to really speed everthing up but lately it seems iexplore.exe is also slowing things down.
Let me know if you have any ideas of what to do. Thanks.

    HJT log

I ran Ad-Aware and SpyBot and computer still seems slow. I notice on start up the svchost runs at 99-100% and everything is super slow. If I end that process things run alot better although between adding a new tab or window cpu usage spikes for some time. iexplore.exe running at 75-95%. I don't know if I have some additional spyware or what but I will post my HJT file for someone to look at at see if anything obvious is there. Thanks

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Removing Spyware & Viruses forum and we apologize for the long delay in a reply.

As it's been several days, if you're still needing help, please post a fresh HJT log file for review and someone will get a look at it ASAP.

    Thanks.

    New HJT log

Here is a new log to look over. I think I found the main culprit though. Windows automatic update was making my CPU run at 99 to 100%. Once I shut off automatic updates my computer has been running much better with just peaks of CPU usage for a few seconds. I found this site that explained the problems people were having with svchost.exe using all their CPU. Here is the link:

    http://askleo.com/how_do_i_fix_this_high_cpu_usage_svchost_virus_or_whatever_it_is.html
You can copy and paste into your browser to read whole article. Basically is say diabling Windows Update is a temporary fix but you will have to manually check for updates until Microsoft gets this fixed.

Anyways here is my HJT log for someone to look at and see if anything else can be helped. Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I copied this from iTNews.com...Apparently numerous people are having similiar issues and this was the first possible solution I read for it...Hopefully it will be helpful...I however still would wait for one of the spcialists to view the HijackThis log that was requested to make sure nothing else was also responsible...

    Microsoft curbs IE7's CPU appetiteBy Shaun Nichols, 2 February 2007 09:49 AEST Applications A A A

Flaw fixed in phishing filter that turned browser into a processor hog.

Microsoft has released an update for Internet Explorer 7 designed to reduce the amount of processor power that the application demands.

Steve Reynolds, Internet Explorer program manager at Microsoft, explained that the problem centred on IE7's phishing filter.

When users attempt to open a web page with a large number of frames, the phishing filter causes the browser to take up unusually high amounts of processor power. advertisement

"This occurs when the phishing filter evaluates the page for each [frame] navigation, resulting in multiple simultaneous evaluations for each page," said Reynolds.

The update is currently available for all users. However, Reynolds said that only Windows Vista currently downloads the browser though the built-in Windows Update component. Other users will have to manually download the update from Microsoft.

Since IE7 was launched in October it has largely been the phishing filter's accuracy, not its processor use, which has come under fire.

A November study by Carnegie Melon University reported that IE7 failed to block more than 30 per cent of phishing sites tested.

In September a study funded by Microsoft reported that the browser blocked more phishing sites than Firefox 2.0, although Mozilla later issued a counter-study claiming that Firefox had superior phishing detection.
