Sorry if this issue has been discussed before, but my problem is: everytime i start Vista for the 1st time and i try to access Windows Explorer using the "Computer" link in "Start" menu, i get a message of "Windows Explorer stopped working ", and "Windows Explorer re-estarting..." and stuff. After a 1st or 2nd try then everything is back to normal. It also happens if i try to access "Network" or "Control Panel" as well, which i suppose are shell extensions of Win Ex. Is there any registry entry which i should check? Is it a problem with handlers, invalid entries, etc? Has it happened to any of you before? Any tips friends? Thank you.

Seems to be a fairly common problem, but the possibles are to numerous to mention here. A simple (possible) fix may be to use system restore to roll back your system to a restore point before the problem first occurred, If that's practical? Sometimes System restore may need to be run in Safe Mode to work. Otherwise, I'd do a Google on windows explorer in vista not working. Or similar.

Had the same problem and this worked for me. Go to Start Menu/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer. After the viewer opens click on the arrow next to Windows Logs. 5 items will drop down. Select Application and scroll through to see if there are critical errors. If a critical error is found click on it and the viewer will tell you which file is causing the error. In my case it was a program which was trying to load a *.dll file which vista would not load. Remove the program and now all is well.
