Explorer pop ups

Hi. All of a sudden, I getting random IE pop ups, usually proceeded by a warning box that say system is at risk for a virus and should be scanned.

I've run Ad-Aware, AOL virus scan, and Spybot, to no avail.

I'm running XP pro, SP2. I keep finding strange files in my System32 folder:

Ljjijig.dll, glrxhyvn.dll, Innmp.ini, inppo.ini. I can't delete them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(I'm running this on a Thinkpad R40.)

Problem solved

Hi --

After reading through dozens of other threads (and following their directons) I've solved the problem by using Vundufix and SDFix.

Thank you for running this board -- your recommendations are terrific.

 

You might want to post another HJT log so the experts can look it over and make sure you've gotten all the baddies

 

That would be sound advice and I'd add that you ought to also post all logs generated by any tools used. Especially since I don't see anything related to a bot that SDFix would be used on.

Download the Killbox from here and save it to the desktop.

• Double-click the KillBox icon on your desktop to open it
• Select "Delete on Reboot "
• Then select "All files ".

Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

• Go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard ".
• Click the red-and-white [Delete File] button.

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. Thanks for all your help. The pop ups are gone, and the machine is working much better. I just have two questions:

1) What did I have? What infected the computer?

2) In the hjt file, I see there are a handful of entries like this:

O23 - Service: IBM KCU Service (TpKmpSVC) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\TpKmpSVC.exe (file missing)

Do I need these entries that have (file missing) in them? I notice there's one for an MS webcam that I've uninstalled and don't use anymore; there's another for AOLTopspeed 2.0 that I know has been replaced by 3.0. In both cases, they say (file missing). (And please don't rag on me about AOL. My dad uses the machine sometimes, and....)

Well, as we ran Vundo Fix, it was a Vundo infection. Pretty common, relatively easy to remove thanks to Atribune and his removal tool.

Unless you know the software is no longer on the machine, do not fix anything with HJT. In some sections of the log, like 09 and 023, the indication of (file missing) is actually a bug in the HJT code. Those files most of the time are there. You get to know with lots of experience which ones are and are not depending on what you're fixing.

We have 3 more things to do, mostly maintenance and then our recommendations:

Delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.

Now that you have regained control of your machine, lets keep it clean. Please follow the links below to ensure the highest possible level of protection against any further invasions. The links and the apps are some of the most highly regarded apps in the field of security/protection & detection. Run AdAware & Spybot at least once a week, depending on your surfing habits.
Spybot Search & Destroy v1.4
Ad-Aware SE Free v1.06r

With AdAware and Spybot: DL, install then check for updates, then scan, repair/remove/quarantine anything found. Reboot before next scan with whichever app is next.

SpywareBlaster will prevent known ActiveX installs, by setting killbits into the registry.
With Spyware Blaster, just DL, check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using 'Restricted Sites' protection in SpywareBlaster nor the 'Immunize' feature in Spybot, you can get far greater coverage with IE-SPYADs, listed below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IE-SPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being installed on your machine install WinPatrol 2007 v11.2.2007.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

Can't say much about Prevx, tho I have not heard anything bad, which of course is good. I usually get to hear things about most of these apps perusing forums. If you feel the need to buy it, then by all means do so. But you can stay pretty secure with what you have installed already. The choice is yours of course.
