    people...

    1) A friend of mine had his HP Media Center PC configured backwards...they (CompUSA) made his RECOVERY partition way too large & his local drive way too small. As a solution, I went with trying to move most of his data over to the larger partition via TweakUI.

    So:

    1) 1st I moved his default 'My Documents' folder location via Properties > Target...which worked fine. But then, in attempting to use TweakUI (to move everything else), I ran into a dead end. On the interface, there is an instruction that recommends dragging a folder to a new location as the more precise way of moving 'Special Folders'...but...there was then no response to any folder dragging in the interface's file tree. Does Microsoft provide any type of support for power toys? Or are there power toys discussion forums around to anyone's knowledge? I couldn't find any help files in the app itself (TweakUI)...& I'm either doing something terribly wrong or something's not working correctly.

    2) The dumb-ass (my friend)…for some inexplicable reason…moved 4 (what look to be) XP update folders to his desktop. When I asked him what happened, he couldn't remember how (or even why) he did it. The 4 folders have the following names:

    1d4fd9963973dabfea5d8e74496e
    4c26c12abe5caa2b406baa026a
    10e1c969ba1687aace
    bfa585fc22d676f9bcb4900371229b50

Each folder has a subfolder entitled 'Update'.

Does anyone know where these belong…so I can move them back to their rightful location?

    Thanks very much,

    mark4man - Welcome to the Board :)
This must be done in Windows Explorer - Right click and hold on the folder, drag to new location and select 'Move here' when you release the mouse button.

Tweakui was written by the Windows programmers in their lunch breaks :) and is not supported by Microsoft. This is clearly stated either on the Powertoys web page on on installing.

I suspect that those files he moved to the desktop may have come from .....

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations\ , but I have absolutely no way of knowing - there are other possible locations. Those alphanumeric strings do not exist on my computer running XP Pro SP2.

I would be very inclined to leave them where they are.

You can delete those. They're 'left overs' from Windows Updates, when the install didn't clean up after itself.

    PeteC & Arie...

Thanks very much...& I think I like the boards already!

On the right click / hold / drag thing...I'm not sure I'm following this function as related to the significance of TweakUI. Are you saying that TweakUI has to be running while this is accomplished in Windows Explorer, or that TweakUI doesn't even play a role (& hence doesn't need to be running or installed or anything else, for that matter)?

If the latter is true...please bear in mind that the only reason I wanted to use it in the first place was because someone had told me (in another XP type forum) that changing folder locations had to be accomplished through this app, so that 1), the registry would be updated; & 2), so that the OS recognized the new location.

If I don't even need TweakUI for this function & right dragging in Explorer accomplishes all of the above on it's own…that's even better.

    Is this the case?

    Thanks again,

It is spelt out loud & clear in the Tweakui interface (screenshot) ....

Changing the location of the Special Folder (using Tweakui) will not move the files.

To move both the folder and the files it contains right drag in Windows Explorer and select Move.

The location of the folder will be updated in the Registry - as is the case with any file/folder you move or delete.

Tweakui is not necessary for this operation. All Tweakui is is a GUI for certain parts of the Registry - in other words a graphical, and safe, registry editor with limited funcrtions.
