I have a Compaq Presario V5000 laptop running Windows XP. When running XP the keyboard driver randomly misses characters and inserts a key sequence that equates to "shift lock" (not "caps lock "). The keyboard works perfectly when the laptop runs Tom's Linux or SuSE Linux 9.0. Updating the keyboard driver does not cure the problem. I have concluded therefore that the HP keyboard driver is buggy. Since I'm not interested in the extra features the HP driver provides, I would like to replace it with a standard keyboard driver. Unfortunately the Add Hardware wizard doesn't allow for this possibility; there are standard modem drivers listed, for example, but not standard keyboard drivers. Can anyone tell me how to do this please?

Just a quick note to say thanks.

I followed the instructions on the page you linked to, but the latest BIOS listed was F.44. After a fruitless session with HP "technical support" (who told me F.52 didn't exist, and then kept telling me to try things I had already told them I had tried), I decided to look up F.44 on the FTP server. Turns out they're listed by SP number, and from the page you linked to I could see I needed SP34305.exe. A bit of rummaging on the FTP server, and I have the right file for F.52! For anyone following this, the details are given here:

    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp34001-34500/sp34305.html

    and the file is here:
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp34001-34500/sp34305.exe

So it's taken a lot longer than it should have done, which means it'll be a while before I get back with the result.
