I've had a lot of problems with IE6 and am now using Firefox. But, I need IE for some applications.

It started almost 2 years ago with IE6 coming up with a runtime error. I learned here that the Google toolbar might be the problem, and when I uninstalled the Google toolbar, IE6 was again displayed, but the when the IE6 page loaded, it was all messed up. If I clicked on IE6, it won't connect, and it stalls my computer and I'd have to re-boot to get out of it.

At this time, my ISP has been bought out by another company, and I'm being asked to sign up with the new company/new ISP. I got all the way through the sign up process, but when I clicked on "activate ", it said my activation can't be completed without IE6 or higher.

That could be the $64,000 question :D

As IE 7 is essentially a complete rewrite of IE there is a strong possibility that the answer is yes, but if your problems are within Windows rather than within IE the the answer has to be maybe.

The 'good' news is that once installed IE 7 can be uninstalled through Add/Remove Programs and IE 6 is restored.

Seems to me that you have little to lose by trying, but remember - no guarantees :)

    PeteC,
Thanks for the reply. Are there any programs that will find and repair windows problems? Just in case installing IE7 doesn't work, I need some other avenues to try to resolve this problem.

I tried installing IE6 (service pack 1) and got a message that there was a newer versions already installed on this computer (service pack 2), and it wouldn't allow me to install it. I thought perhaps If I re-installed it would help, but it didn't.

You could try running IEFix - General purpose fix for Internet Explorer This is the closest you can get without re-installing SP2 (XP Service Pack 2) which is not always possible and impossible if your build of XP included SP2.

I would try that - it cannot do any harm and may sort out IE6 - note that it repairs IE - effectively reinstalls it. Do not take too much notice of the Fixes the following problems section, it is What IEFix does that is important.

If that has no effect I would go ahead and install IE7.

If the problem remains the best option is to make a Repair of XP, although for this you need a retail copy of the XP install CD, not a Recovery CD. If you go down that route I will post instructions for a repair install if you need them.

    Wow.......Thanks PeteC!

The IEFix worked! It restored IE6 and I can now use it! But, it's slower than molasses! Also, all my original bookmarks are gone. Is there anyway to copy bookmarks over from Firefox to IE6, so I have the bookmarks on both browsers?

Is IE7 any faster? Should I try installing IE7?

Glad to hear it worked for you :)

I would say that IE 7 and IE 6 are equivalent in terms of speed. Your molasses problem may be due to an excess of Temporary Internet files - clear them out and set the cache size to 50Mb which is more than adequate. Tools > Internet Options - General tab
Possibly - start a new thread in the Netscape & Mozilla forum.
