Would probably be better if you asked specific questions then to ask people to read through a ton of stuff....

There's always Windows XP if you have doubts about Vista...

    Hi Pool,

It's a complete waste of time reading blogs like the one you linked to. They are dominated by Linux, OS-X, yes and Windows partisans pushing their points of view, usually to excess.

It all boils down to trying out different things, finding out what suits you, and using it. The various Linux distros do work for some people, and not for others, especially those people who don't want to learn a few command lines. Installing new tools or programs in a Linux distro can lead to hair being torn out, but normally a double click on a Windows .exe file does the job simply and easily.

Windows, in its various forms works for millions of people around the world, on a scale that Linux users and the Mac fraternity can only dream about. If you believe all the nonsense written about Microsoft then buy a Mac, or explore Linux, but don't avoid Vista without trying it. I, and I am sure many other amateur computer users, have been using Vista for three months now, and for me it just works.

My personal experience is that Vista is as usable as XP, and much more robust than XP - I have yet to break it, but I was re-installing images of XP about once a month. Just try it! ! !

To paraphrase what one of my fellow MVPs said in a newsgroup, Vista will be the spawn of Satan right up until the moment that Windows Vienna is released, at which point it will become the greatest OS ever :D

I've been running Vista exclusively since last November, and though it has some minor bugs and niggles, on the whole it is a great OS. Far better than WinXP was immediately after that was released.

So true! I can remember people complaining about 3.x, insisting that "DOS does everything you need to do." Then they complained about moving from 3.x to "buggy" 95. Then from 95 to "bloated" 98. Then from 98 to "resource hog" XP.

Most of the problems I see with Vista come from trying to run it with older hardware for which there are no Vista drivers. Microsoft is getting the blame for hardware developers not issuing Vista drivers in a timely manner even for their newer components.

I'd agree with others, Vista has been more stable than XP for me, and is just a "smoother" OS to use. But I am experimenting with Linux (Ubuntu "Feisty Fawn" 7.04). Linux still isnt as simple as clicking an EXE file as Roger says, but with install managers like Automatix2, it's getting closer. I wish Linux all the best and if they can make it simpler to install/uninstall programmes, then the competition will be good for Windows. The install process of new Linux distros like Ubuntu is as easy or easier than for XP/Vista.

...and there is a bonus... NO REGISTRY. ;-)

I would also agree with the above comments. I was testing Vista through the Beta phase, and have had it as my only OS since RC1. I have a limited budget and, apart from a very needed graphics card upgrade, all my original hardware and my entire collection of XP software are running smoothly in Vista (28 programs).
I have had no bsod,s. The only problems I have experienced have been self inflicted, through lack of knowledge in how to handle a possible new function in Vista.
Performance? Not a great deal to see over and above XP. It seems slicker on the Internet. One thing to consider is I feel it will be ventually, a smoother introduction to 64 bit computing.
I am confident that, with the introduction of the first major service pack, it will be a very acceptable OS.

    Thanks for the reply everyone.:)

I am actually more concern with the DRM stuff they are talking about... is Vista really another step to lock people in? Or is it actually more standard compliant?

Yea I think I'll stick with XP till the situation becomes more transparent...:D

I've been running Vista Home Premium on my home-built MSI K9N Diamond for over three months now without any problems. Everything works just fine.
