Hello, im just new these forums and from some of the threads i have being reading you guys seem to know your stuff so im hoping you can help.

The problem is with a pc that belongs to a relative of mine. Each time the machine boots up it gets to the login screen. As i soon as i select a profile to load the machine reboots itself. Its gets as far as displaying the desktop image for the profile and just appears to lose power then.

I have tested the Hard Drive for viruses (none found) and removed all malware/spyware.
I have tried two earlier restore points.
I have checked the disk for errors.

All of this was done in safe mode and did not help.

Im not sure but maybe this could be a problem with the memory or another Hardware component. I do not think its the disk.

I plan to check the disk in another pc. I couldnt last night because its a SATA drive and my pc's HD is IDE.

I also checked Hardware Monitor in the BIOS to check CPU temps and all appears ok.

So if anyone has any suggestions please reply.

I do not have the current spec now as the machine is at home but it is a Fujitsu Siemens machine only recently purchased.

    Thank You

    steps3314 - Welcome to the Board :)
This may sound an easy get out on our part, but if under warranty the supplier should sort it out. I would not open the case - doing so may invalidate the warranty.

I would suggest to get the original disks that were supplied with the system. Rerun the driver installation.

I have on several occasions had a similar issue on various PCs due to a combination of a software firewall and SP2 ....... booted up fine without one or the other, but not with both installed. I finally narrowed it down to a conflict with the video drivers and timing (that I could never find a suitable fix for), but opted for using a different software firewall in each case, which cured the problem. Try tapping F8 when you start the computer to enable the Advanced Boot Menu, then select 'Enable VGA Mode'. Does it then boot and load successfully? Is there a software firewall installed?

Ok, i have tried to enable VGA Mode but still same. I have now also confirmed the issue is most likely with the disk as ive brought it to work and set it as master HDD and the problem still persists in this new machine.

After checking event viewer there were some warnings of trojan horses found on the 02-05-2007. I only recieved this pc on 07-05-2007 and ran the virus checker and it said no viruses had being found. Its possible they were detected and removed earlier. Either way im running the anti virus software again. There is no software firewall installed on the machine.

Maybe its time to cut my losses and re-install a fresh copy. This machine is used by kids and its full of software, something must be causing this to happen. Machine runs fine in safe mode.

You are on the right track...try swapping out the memory sticks...if any one of the memory sticks has a bad chip, it will cause this type of problem.

That sounds like a good idea but i have tried the disk in a couple of other machines so therefore i suppose the problem has to be with the HDD itself. If the computer had of worked in another pc then i was sure it was the memory. Thank you for your input and as suggested earlier i have advised the owner to bring it back to store as it has a three year warranty so he might aswell justify the cost of the warranty and have them repair it. Hopefully a fresh install will not be needed. This one caught me out and took alot of my time and energy but i suppose thats why i like computers so much

    Thanks lads

    Steps3314:

Putting the system drive (HDD) in another machine and expecting it to run is a misconception unless it is an identical machine with the exact same hardware. Getting a system drive from one machine to function properly as the system drive in a different machine requires a repair install. Anything short of this will not work because of the different hardware configurations and corresponding driver issues.

I'd be more inclined to slave this in another machine, copying off the files you want to save and then putting it back into the problem machine and trying a repair install or a completely new installation. If the mfg provided a restore disk to return it to a factory condition, you can do that and then copy back the files you saved when it was in the other machine.

    ;)

I just recently had this same sort of problem with my new PC running Vista though... the problem ended up being a RAM issue. I would sometimes not even get to the login screen before it blacked out and rebooted. Start it in safe mode and it ran fine! Mine particularly was due to a ram stick being in the wrong slot, didn't know you had certain slots to use up first before using the others. I doubt that my issue is your same issue, but it's worth looking into. GOOD LUCK!
(taking it back to manufacturer is a good idea though, took them less than a week to get my old computer back to me when I sent it in, but it wasnt the same problem)
