My problem is quite different from the thread before mine

I formatted my computer, installed Win2k Pro and updated all the hardwares I have in it like graphic card, scanner, and CD-RW.

The problem is that, I rebooted my comp after updating the drivers and now the E: (my cd drive) does not show up on my windows explorer or My Computer. On my right bottom corner at the quick start thingy, the Adaptec DirectCD Wizard has a cross on it and states "No supported Cd-R/Cd-RW Drive!" So went to device manager and updated my CD-ROM drive. But even after the update it was the same.

    Device status states

"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

Click Troubleshooter to start the troubleshooter for this device. "

Help, all my backups from previous window is stored in a cd.. I need to access the cd!

First step is to establish that the drive hasn't become faulty , do you have a win98 boot floppy ? if so boot up off the floppy which has generic CD drivers on board , if the system finds the drive it'll install the drivers for it. If this is successful then it establishes the CD drive is not faulty. Then try removing the CD drive via Control Panel and re-installing , sometimes this works.

By chance, in the device manager, is there also a problem with your IDE controller?
