Something is sending me to three unwanted sites before I get to the site chosen from a list generated from my search engines (Yahoo and Google). I have tried running numerous programs such as AdAware, SpyBot and CCleaner and none of them fixed the problem. I was told Hijackthis might help and I ran a scan, but the results are pretty difficult to understand. I would really appreciate your help as this is my work computer. Here's my Hijackthis log...

Hi,
Can you copy and paste your Hosts file here so we can see if that is where the redirects are...Here are the steps to it and what you need to do incase you are unfamiliar with it:
(1) Right click your start button then LEFT click on Explore
(2) At the top click on tools then folder options and view
(3) Uncheck "Do not show hidden files & folders and select "show hidden files and folders "...Click apply and okay
(4) Scroll down till you see the second listing for "Windows" and click plus sign
(5) Look for "System32" and click on plus sign
(6) Look for "Drivers" and click on plus sign
(7) You will see a folder next to "etc" - click on it
(8) Click on "Hosts" and a "Open with" screen will pop up
(9) Choose "Notepad" and click okay
(10) At the top under Edit - select "select all" (your hosts file will highlight)
(11) At the top under Edit - select "Copy "
(12) Paste it here so it can be viewed.
Note: I am not certified to advise you on your log, so until a specialist is available I will try to assist you...

Hi marielle042
Welcome to windowsbbs

I believe you may have a Vundo infection.

Please move Hijackthis to a permanent directory on your hard drive, say C:\HJT – The Desktop or a temporary folder is not a suitable location for backups made by HJT when entries are fixed.

To do this click on start, click my computer, double click your C drive, make a new folder name it HJT. Now go and right click on Hijackthis click copy, go back to the folder you made, right click and click paste. Delete the one on your desktop. You need to unzip HJT in this folder.

Then please rename Hijackthis.exe to Killer.exe and post a new log.

Thanks
Geri

Geri,

Thank you for your asisstance Master Green. I have followed your instructions and here are my host files...

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

new log

Hi Geri and thank you for your assistance. I ended up uninstalling Hijackthis and reinstalling it to my C: drive, hopefully this goes along with your directions. I did not rename it as I am unsure of where to do this (do you mean the folder I am saving it in?) Here is my new log...

Hi Marielle042
While we have a chance, I wanted to quickly jump in here and let you know that your Hosts File looks clean...Forgot to mention that in my last post...

Hi marielle042

HJT still shows in a temp location.
C:\DOCUME~1\Marielle\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

This is not a good place for it, it could be deleted by mistake and any back ups it saves would be lost, and if we happened to need them they would be gone.

Please delete the HJT that you have and reinstall it as instructed below.
Let it download to the default location which should be C:/Program files

• Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
• Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
• Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish
Please close HJT for now.
• DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

To Rename Hijackthis.exe to Killer.exe,

Click on "Start "> "My Computer "> C: Drive> Double click on "Program Files" Find the HJT folder and double click.

Right click on the Dynamite icon and click rename, Type in Killer.exe then click anywhere on your screen. Close out of those windows.

Then click on Start> go to your program files click on Hijackthis and run it and save the log.

Then please post the new log.
Thanks
Geri

Hi marielle042

Good job on the HJT download:)
Well that sure didn't show me what I thought it would:cool:

Please download this.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
• Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
• When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Please post the log for me to look at.
Thanks
Geri

Attn: Geri
Since I am trying to learn from specialists like yourself, and view the HijackLog in this post and see nothing appears to be solving the problem from what has been requested I am wondering if "WINDOWS MESSENGER" (Steps enclosed) is disabled:

Windows XP Home
Click Start-> Settings -> Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double-click Services
Scroll down and highlight Messenger
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties
Click the STOP button
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

Then the two 09 entries are removed, since they are apparently related would help...???

Hi Master Green
The 09's are legit. I don't believe messenger has anything to do with the redirects when using a search engine.

Hi
OK combofix found and deleted one file that comes up as a worm.

Let's run this and then let me know if you are still being redirected.

Please follow the instructions exactly.

Now download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
• Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine ".
6. Under "Reports "
• Select "Automatically generate report after every scan "
• Un-Select "Only if threats were found "
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
1. Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
2. Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan ".
4. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
5. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions "
6. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
7. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
8. Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan.

Please post the log and let me know how things are.

Thanks
Geri

Hi Geri,
Everything is working great now, no more redirects!:D However, there is now a black icon in the lower right hand corner of my screen that says "Windows Messenger-not signed in." Do I need to do something with this?
Through the process of fixing this I have accumulated a bunch of spyware, adware and virus removal programs and dont think i need to keep all of them installed. What would you recommend I install (or keep installed) for future protection? (I initially had AVG Free Edition but since it did not pick up on this I got rid of it and installed Trend Micro.)
Last question, what was the actual problem with my computer???

Here is the AVG report scan...

Hi marielle042
Follow Master Greens instructions in post # 12
If you do not use Windows Messenger then disable it, if you do use it set it to manual. If you want the icon gone right click on it and click exit.

You can delete combofix and AVG Anti-spyware. I will give you some recommendations in my next post.

These files come up bad on combofix.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\bszip.dll <<<This one was a worm
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdtfy.exe <<< I believe this was a Vundo infection

Please do me a favor and post one more new HJT log and a new combofix log, before you delete combofix.

Thanks
Geri

Hi marielle042

OK those logs look clean.

Here is what is left to do.

You can delete any tools you were asked to download, (Combofix) There will be newer versions if ever needed again any way.

AVG Anti-Spyware you can keep or not, Your choice.

We have just a few more things to do, mostly maintenance and then our recommendations:

Delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. (I see you have CCleaner, Run it)
But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion. It is very rare that anything significant is ever found.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
1. Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 23,000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all,
and MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

6. Install WinPatrol to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine

Now just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly.

7. Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

8. ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only, Cleans out temporary files all the garbage you collect while surfing the web.

9. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

10. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
11. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
