I am not sure which setting is required to maintain the dropdown list in FF2.0.0.3. The list of visited sites is there, as long as the browser is open. But, when I restarted it is gone. Tools|Privacy|Clear Private Data is on, but I have selected only Download history and Cache to be removed on closing. I have checked to remember visited pages for 2 days. Everything else is unchecked.
I don't care for Search History. Is there another setting?

Privacy>History second line "Remember what I have entered in forms and the search bar "? That sounds promising.

It may not help, but have you tried removing the check mark to clear the private data? After a couple restarts, place the check mark back and see if it works. Beyond that, I would do an uninstall and reinstall.

    Westside ...

I'm unable to duplicate your problem. I have the same things checked in Options > Privacy > Private Data > Settings that you do, and I don't see anything in about:config that could cause what you're experiencing. The dropdown list in the Address window seems to be related to the browser history, though ... I just cleared my Browsing history (which I have set for five days), and the dropdown list disappeared, as well.

    Mike ...
I think that's unlikely to solve Westside's problem, as the information he's interested in appears to be stored in the profile, rather than in the program folder. Which file, though, I haven't determined.

    Just my 2¢ worth....

I concur with JSS3 ( to some extent)
The URL BAR dropdown is connected to browser History.
It shows legitimate addresses that were ACTUALLY entered and connected to.
i.e. addresses that will appear in the history (typo errors may show UNTIL history is cleared, FF is closed or until they are removed via "shift+delete ".

    The entry in:
Tools>Options>Privacy = "Remember what I enter in forms and SEARCH BAR" pertains to the "SEARCH BAR" not the URL BAR. I think various other factors my effect how things work also, Keywords - Bookmarklets and settings in the SEARCH BAR dropdown > manage Search Engine Lists > "show search suggestions "

In Seamonkey 1.1.1 url bar history was stored in "localstore.rdf "
    <RDF:Seq RDF:about= "nc:url bar-history ">
This does not seem to be the case in FF

It seems pretty convoluted to me, but I am not a devout FF user - so I could be wrong...

Hope this is of some assistance.

To elaborate on one of the Capt's points:
The URL dropdown list is directly related to the browser history (stored in the history.dat file), but reflects ONLY those URLs actually typed or pasted into the Address window and connected to (though it will reflect an Error 404 Not Found) ... it does NOT reflect connections made via bookmarks, or from links on webpages or in emails.

    I still don't know what's causing Westside's problem.

I can't figure out what FF's localstore.rdf file actually does store. When I look at mine, I see references to Phoenix and Firebird (FF's previous names), as well as references to extensions long since uninstalled.

I concur with all that has been said above, but just for the heck of it, I followed Bill's suggestion, and I have items from yesterday in the URL dropdown.
My FF2.x has always been that way, while FF1.5.x had not. I am using a different profile for 2.x. Having uninstalled 1.5, it may be interesting to see what happens if I use the 1.5.x profile which is easy to do when I click on the "Internet" button of my keyboard. The settings are the same as for the other profile, and nothing is in the drop down
In any event, it is not an important issue, as I don't keep my History longer than two days.
