    New WinXP labtop with 120 GB SATA drive...(C 15, D 33, and E, 100) also using Ghost 2003

After installing Ghost 2003, I did the 'check for live updates' forgetting that the SATA patch has been REMOVED (why Semantec?) and also foolishly forgetting to use the -noide switch.

Result: of coures Ghost hangs just after PC-DOS startup.

My 'fix'. I first tried using the WinXP Recovery Console, and executed FixBoot and FixMBR. This didnt help (but did it corrupt MBR???)

I made a bootable CD with FDisk... original partitions seemed intact, with a 'new' primary partition for PC-DOC. I deleted this partition, and made the first NTFS partition 'active'... and rebooted. Voila... the OS is back and kicking.

Second attempt at Ghost, but now with -noide switch.

Result: The ghost backup image is created, but AFTER completion, the system hangs, rather than returning to Windoze.

I did another FDisk 'fix' and rebooted to Windoze, and then tried a system RESTORE with Ghost from the image just created. This completed successfully too, but again hangs, before returning to Windoze.

The 'hang point' is a blank screen with a single blinking cursor, just after 100% completion of Ghost action.

Ghost with the -fni switch hangs BEFORE beginning the system backup.

Have I mucked up the MBR or ??? Do I have to reinstall Windoze + drivers + patches... to find out Ghost still wont work?

    Any help appreciated...

burgerbytes - Welcome to the Board :)

I can't help you directly, but one of our Team Members is quite familiar with Ghost. I have brought your thread to his attention - he may well be away gliding over the May Day holiday weekend.

It seems like the solution is to not launch Ghost from Windows, but to create a bootable ghost CD...

Not what the product advertises, but the safest in the long run. I've been using Ghost for 4 yrs... and except for the SATA / -noide thing, it's worked fine.

    Hello burgerbytes!

Never take an advertisers word to the bank ... :p ... !

Yes, I agree with that. I have used Ghost 2003 since, well, 2003 and older versions before that. I have never initiated any Ghost task from within Windows but have always restarted the computer from Ghost Boot Disks. I have Ghost 2003 installed for two reasons, to be able to create the GBD's and to be able to extract individual files from an Image.

I have never had any problems with internal SATA hard disks but if you have it in an USB enclosure, the USB drivers are not making anyone happy.

Another frequent problem is to get stuck in the "virtual partition" from which Ghost is run when initiating the task from within windows. There is a way out but the problem can be avoided by not getting there at all ... ... by rebooting using GBD's.

I like doing it manually from DOS on source and target hard disks that are not "active" and I will continue doing so for as long as Ghost 2003 works. I've heard that Vista is a problem but I'm not there yet.

I frequent a site with a forum dedicated to Ghost. See my signature for the link, make a visit, do a search for "SATA ", "USB" and "virtual partition" and notice that I know nothing compared to those guys!

I also ALWAYS use ghost from a boot cd I made and only have ghost installed so as to use Ghost Explorer. When using -noide from a boot cd I have never had any problems. And I have found that I only need to use that switch for certain sata drives, but not all sata drives. When ghosting clients' systems I first try without the switch and if ghost fails then I reboot and launch ghost with the -noide switch. I don't need to use the switch on my WD 200GB sata 2 drives.

Oh, and I always disable the ghost start service too. It's an unnecessary process that loads at boot.
