I read somewhere that to initialize the MBR in window 2000, the (fdisk /mbr) won't apply. There is something else but I can't recall it? Help?

fdisk /mbr is a DOS command

You need to boot to the recovery console and use the fixmbr.

If the recovery console was not installed (likely) as a boot option - then you will need to boot to the W2K CD to start the recovery console.

....And if W2K came pre-installed and you didn't get an install cd, call either MS or the computer manufacturer and tell them of your problem. Please post back what they tell you. While talking to them, please tell them how you feel about this situation.

    recovery console

My win2k pro came pre-installed from Dell(optiplex). Will I be able to install the recovery console since it seems a good option to have? I do have a good paper on how to install it but still not sure if I should go ahead?

    Install that recovery console

It will increase your boot time but you can set the boot options display time to 5 seconds...

If you ever get the error - When starting the computer in either Normal mode or Safe mode, you receive the message: "Unmountable Boot Volume ", and you are unable to enter Windows...

You will need to run "Chkdsk /r" from the recovery console - or wipe the drive, and that can ruin your whole day!

    fat vs ntfs

    >fdisk mbr should work, I had to do that when I botched up my linux installation

Please correct if I am wrong. If the boot drive is FAT then fdisk /mbr will still work. But if the boot drive is NTFS then I will have to use fixmbr in the recovery console?

And thanks for all the tips. I installed the RC and feel great. :p

I think you have hit it right on the head. The Recovery Console is needed to deal with NTFS files and the old FDISK /MBR will still work to restore the Master Boot Record if you have chosen to use the FAT32 file system.

    Oops I ASSumed NTFS

I should not have assumed NTFS.

I keep a 2nd "common" FAT32 drive which all users share as a dumping ground - like our comunal MP3 collection, but the boot drive - I wanted the most from it so I used NTFS

    ( I'm getting sloppy )

Your assumption is easy to understand. For one thing, FDISK doesn't exist in window 2000. Unless one choose to put it on a floppy or use a win98 floppy.
