I have a Belkin N1 Wirelss router running and I'm trying to get the wireless working properly but have had many problems. I had the no signal and showing WLAN connection but not been able to connect to it.

These are no more as I'm having problems with the security of wireless. I previously used WEP but after a lot of time on the net, I switch to WPA-TSK.

Now with this my laptop works fine, connects correctly and has an internet connection. Now when I try and connect my PSP to it, it finds the access point with WPA security but that's as far as it goes. I keep getting a security error. So I'm guessing it's caused by the problem I'm having with my Nokia N93 mobile - it finds the access point (sometimes) but shows it using WEP not WPA. And it doesn't connect at all. So I used Netstumbler on my laptop and it showed my wiresless using WEP so I triple checked my router settings and it states that I have WPA-TSK running.

So I'm very confused that my laptop and PSP show WPA running but my phone and netstumbler show WEP running. How is this possible? Is there a fix out there? :(

Yes, there are fixes, but one must know exactly what needs to be fixed!

If the router is configured properly, and is setup to use WPA, then make no mistake, the router is using WPA and any comp/device that connects to it is using WPA, without exception. No other connection is possible.

If netstumbler reports the AP as using WEP, it means that it is reporting what "it thinks" is WEP and is unable to differentiate betwen WPA & WEP for your specific wlan.

Same goes for the PSP. Is the wireless adapter in the PSP capable of using WPA to begin with? If the adapter is a 80211b adapter then it cannot use WPA period, even with newest drivers.

The best way to t-shoot all of this is to disable any wifi security in the AP, then delete all saved wlan connection configs on the computers/devices, then setup new connections on these comps/devices.

If all can connect then joy, if a comp/device cannot connect then look at that particular comp/device for the cause of the problem. Once connection with no security has been achieved, then proceed to setup the AP using WEP, starting with 64 but WEP. Then retest all comp/devices.

Then duplicate again using WEP 128bt. Then WPA.

The reason for using 64bit WEP is because not all 80211b adapters can use anything higher than that, unless specific driver patches have been released that upgrade the adapter firmware to 128bit.

The moral being this: get it all working with no security first, then little by little move up in security levels to see where things break down, then fix where it breaks down.

Well I formatted both my phone and laptop and the wireless suddenly started working. Had to select channel 6 instead of auto though.

Thanx for your help mate ;)

Ok I might've jumped the gun a bit - it works but not all the time. Gonna move the router to another room and see if that helps. ;)

    What is RTS?

Ok I totally jumped the gun. It's back to more miss than hit :(

I was reading through various forums trying to find an answer and found this post :-

Is this something I can do? ;)
