Thunderbird fonts not remembering setting

Why do the fonts in Thunderbird not stay the same as in the last message I sent?

When I first installed Thunderbird it seems that there was a setting and I chose a font that I no longer want to use when composing a message. I realize that I can change the font when first starting the message but the one that is already there seems terribly familiar and I thought I remembered choosing it when I was so overwhelmed with FF and TB installation.

I've check the Account Settings and all the tabs under the Option tab. I figured since it was not a "normal" font I'd spot it right away, but didn't.

I changed the font to Arial on the last message and then when I open the Compose window for a new email I thought it would be pre-set for Arial but it wasn't.

    Thanks.

    Pat,

The setting for the default font is here:

    Tools | Options | Display
    Click on the "Fonts" Tab

Select the font that you want to be the default, in the "Serif" option.

Thanks Ramona, but that didn't do it.

That's the place I looked and tried it again and again just now but when I still attempt to send myself a test email that same old font is still there.

Perhaps I need to close down Thunderbird and see if that corrects the problem?

I still seem to have these strange things happen that should be straight forward but aren't for me.

Which version do you have? I am using v.2.0. If you are talking about Composition, then you should check: Tools|Options|Composition|General
The HTML settings can be changed, and you can pick the font of your choice, color of the text, and background color, in the HTML section.
I think that the Display|Formatting refer to mail which you receive. I have the same settings as in Composition, although you should see the settings of the sender. In fact, I am using a kind of light orange-brown background, and someone was sending with green fonts, which were almost illegible.
I am not sure about the 1.5.0.10 settings. I can't get to it, as I have 2.0 open.
Let me know which version you have, and I can give it a shot. They have changed around the settings location, slightly.

Just checked 1.5.0.10. The Display settings are the same as in 2.0, while the Composition settings include a HTML Option button. That will allow you to do the same as in 2.0.

I am using 1.5. I've messed around with this and printed off a 5 page Help article this morning on the Thunderbird site.

I finally gave up and decided that someday I'll figure it out. The funny thing is I think I remember setting that no longer wanted font. But as I've said I've been overwhelmed with the new VISTA and probably shouldn't have started using Thunderbird and FF over Netscape until I was more familiar with the OS.

Should I upgrade to 2.0 while I'm at it? I check for updates regularly and it was noted that none were available. If I do should I install over this version or uninstall and re install?

    Thanks.

It would be best if you uninstall 1.5, as it won't affect your Profile. Don't forget to delete the Program File: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird

If you have installed plugins, then make a backup copy of your plugins folder before deleting the Program Folder. Once you have done this, then reboot the PC, so the system files can be updated. Now install Thunderbird 2.0.0.0:

If what I said in my second reply (#5) does not work, blame Vista. It should work. I tested both 1.5.0.10, and 2.0, and both work in XP.

    Westside,

That's the sitting I was looking for.

The problem was that when you set the font and go back later, mine has reverted to " variable" but when I go to compose an email the font I've chosen is there.

Strange and hard to follow but that took care of my problem.

    Thanks.

    Ramona,

I'm downloading the newer version of TB and will install per your instructions.

    Thanks.

Not sure what's happening with the two of you, but when I select the "Garamond" font face as the default Serif font, in:
    Tools | Options | Display | Fonts

then when I open the "Compose" window, the "Garamond" font face shows as the default. See screen shot below...

When you Reply to a message, then you have to select the font in the Compose window.

    Boy, is this weird.

If I go to Options/Tools/Composition and enter a font of choice it appears in both the Write and the Reply email.

So when I read your message I went to where you did and the font I had chosen in the other area was there.

In the first option the font isn't showing when I go back but using your method it is still showing.

Anyway all is well and and I'm sure that once again I've confused everyone.

    Thanks for the help.

Glad that you finally have your font! It won't take very long for you to be up to snuff on Firefox and Thunderbird. Sometimes trial and error is the only way... :D
