I started cleaning a friend's computer (Windows XP Home SP2) tonight after discovering several instances of malware with Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware (with latest definitions). Some of the malwares are listed in the thread title.

I instructed Spybot to clean all items it found except two registry items that might be legitimate. Their cable provider (Charter Communications) might have made those changes when they set up the computer for Charter recently. (I don't recall exactly which items. I will post them next time I am at their house).

Spybot appeared to successfully clean all items except NewDotNet. Spybot asked to run at startup on reboot so I allowed it. Upon rebooting, Spybot performed another lengthy scan but apparently was unsuccessful with removing NewDotNet. (NewDotNet was still listed in Spybot after its after-reboot scan.)

I ran Ad-Aware after working with Spybot. Ad-Aware found 76 New Critical Objects (11 registry keys, 54 registry values, 9 files, 2 folders). Some of what Ad-Aware found were Win32.TrojanDownloader.Agent, Adware.Instafinder, Adware.Linkmaker, tracking cookies, etc. I instructed Ad-Aware to remove all items found.

I looked at the HOSTS file and it contains only the 127.0.0.1 localhost entry so it appears nothing has messed with the HOSTS file.

I ran HJT and the log also contains a startup reference to New.net.

After I finished with Ad-Aware, I attempted to remove a New.net entry in "Add/Remove Programs" and it appeared to do nothing so I shut down the computer.

I will post a fresh HJT log (with HijackThis.exe renamed to killer.exe) and complete startuplist next time I am at their house. (Had to come home to get my password for Windows BBS so I can log on from their computer.) :)

In the meantime, are there any other recommendations you have that I can execute next time I am at their house (hopefully Monday evening)?

I hope to have their system clean by week's end so any suggestions about what I can do right away will be appreciated. I could run other anti-malware apps such as AVG Anti-Spyware, X-Cleaner, etc. in an attempt to further clean the computer but I don't want to do any of that without a malware-removal expert's blessing. :)

I did not run Windows Update yet since I don't know if malware will interfere. Their Norton AntiVirus 2005 is expired and woefully out of date. I am considering replacing NAV with BitDefender 8 Free Edition. Still, I won't proceed with securing their system with AV and AS apps, 3rd-party firewall, MVPS HOSTS, etc. until their system is clean unless you direct me otherwise.

THANKS for your attention to this message. :)

EDIT: I located Bleeping Computer's NewDotNet removal instructions. I will download the LSP-Fix to my USB thumb drive in case I need it. (I also printed Bleeping Computer's LSP-Fix tutorial.)

    Hi mailman
Run the startup list before renaming HJT.

    Thanks for the heads-up, Geri.

I made sure I have "Show hidden files and folders" enabled via Windows Explorer. (It was already enabled.) I also unchecked "Hide extensions for known file types" (because I prefer seeing the extensions).

I renamed killer.exe back to hijackthis.exe before generating the startuplist info. Then I renamed hijackthis.exe back to killer.exe and ran a fresh HJT scan.

Below, you will find the following:
    • HJT log
    • Spybot scan report
    • Startuplist log

I will await further instructions before proceeding.

I'll be stepping in as Geri has some long hours at work to tend to.

Did you indeed run the NewDotNet removal tool? I don't see any of it in the log by name.

I do see one item in HJT and it needs removing.

Access your Add or Remove Programs Control Panel by hitting your [Start] button, select Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs. Then find the following programs and click the [Change|Remove] button for each, if they are listed. If they are not, continue with instructions
    quickbar

 Run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':

    O2 - BHO: Quick! - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-C0FF-FD67B79CAF2C} - C:\PROGRA~1\quickbar\quickbar.dll

    O3 - Toolbar: Quick! - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-C0FF-FD67B79CAF2C} - C:\PROGRA~1\quickbar\quickbar.dll

Search for, and delete, if found, the following files/folders:
    C:\PROGRA~1\quickbar<<<<---this folder

    Reboot, post new log.

I'm going to mosey on over to the Spybot forum to check on those entries relating to the av.

    Hi, Tom. Thanks!
No, I did not run the removal tool per the Bleeping Computer instructions.

Should I run that before following your other instructions above?

Aside from the reg key pointed to, I don't see any other indications of NewDotNet, so you can manually delete the key, pretty sure you're capable of that and then run the fix I posted.

This is something I hadn't read about in a while. This is spybot alerting you to the fact that the Windows security center has the alerts turned off. Some other security applications do this at the option of the user.

But as some malware also do this, Spybot looks there for a change. So no need to have Spybot 'fix' this, unless the changes were not done by the user,

I manually deleted the following registry key that Spybot had identified as associated with NewDotNet:

    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-262844384-1567122366-746178071-1006\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext \Stats\{4A2AACF3-ADF6-11D5-98A9-00E018981B9E}

My use of Add/Remove Programs for NewDotNet the other night also apparently worked. NewDotNet entry no longer exists in Add/Remove Programs or in HJT logs.

I also used Add/Remove Programs to remove the "Quick! Toolbar" so it appears I did not need to use HJT to remove quickbar.dll. The "Quick!" (or "quickbar ") program folder is also absent from the Program Files folder. Nothing "quick" in there except QuickTime. :)

I suspect the Windows Security Center registry entries in the Spybot scan result are the result of using Norton Antivirus. (I also get those in my Spybot scans at home and I use Norton AntiVirus there as well and I'm fairly confident that computer is clean.) I'll rescan this computer with Spybot after uninstalling Norton AntiVirus (if my friend decides not to renew) to see what happens to those registry keys.

    ==========
I am still concerned about the Spybot scan result:

There is also another similar file in the C:\WINDOWS folder: NDNuninstall6_98.exe that Spybot apparently missed.

Am I safe to simply delete those two files from the the WINDOWS folder?

Is there anything else I can do regarding removal and/or verification that this computer is clean?

Ok, everything looks good, machine performing ok now?
Just manually delete those, they are harmless.

Yep! This computer seems to be working well. THANKS!

I deleted the NDNuninstall files discussed above, emptied the Recycle Bin, turned off System Restore, rebooted, and re-enabled System Restore. Then I ran Spybot and Ad-Aware scans with the latest definitions and I'm happy to say there is no sign of NewDotnet. :)

Spybot found a few tracking cookies and I had Spybot fix them.
Unless you suggest any other tests which might sniff out any more malware, I will assume this computer is clean (as far as we can tell) and I will proceed with securing the computer with various layers of protection over the next few days. All "High Priority" Windows Updates are apparently already installed except for IE 7.0.

Thanks again for your help, Geri and Tom. I greatly appreciate it.

Yeah, everything looks good, no worries about cookies of course.

I won't bother with my closing speech, you already know it. :p
