I have tried updating my computer via the windows update site and get as far as the screen with the moving green blocks but it just seems to hang at this point.
If i then try to exit the site either by clicking the X in the top right hand corner or by ctl+alt+delete INTERNET explorer just locks up and sits there doing nothing, the only way i can close it down is to reboot.
I have tried re-installing windows scripting and also re-registered
    regsvr32 jscript.dll
    regsvr32 vbscript.dll

but it is still doing the same thing.
any help would be very welcome.

Have you let it run for several minutes when it gets to the green bar screen?
