After reading through some recent threads here, I beli eve my machine has this Vundo virus. Unfortunately, before reading this I had talked to a few people at work who told me my NAVCE was corrupt and that I should uninstall it and then reinstall (I have always kept it up to date). Well long story short I can't get it to uninstall completely - It still shows up in the system tray and I can open it but nothing is functional. Live update will download new def files and appears to install them but the virus defi nition file still reads 2001... I've tried several times to remove it again (between re-boots) and it just hangs part way through the uninstall. I'd like to install a new AV program (probably McAfee) but not before I expunge NAVCE. The version is 7.60.926 Any help greatly appreciated since it appears I now have essentially no AV protection....

Hi MikeC55, you may want to check out this link:http://windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=61013
I had trouble trying to install NIS 2007 over NAV 2006 and ended up with a Symantec Techo spending 3 & 3/4 hours with remote control over my comp removing all the garbage in the root of the computer. I will seriously consider another AV program in the next year. The above link was posted by Mike Flynn as he has had a lot of problems with Norton and his post certainly made me wonder what I had invested in.LOL Neil.:)

Symantec's products are very large and hog most of the system's resources. My advice would be to ditch it altogether and get yourself a decent product (not McAffee either)

Do a web search for "Norton Removal Tool" and download it. Before running it however, use hijackthis to remove all references to symantec/norton and also use the administrative tools services mmc panel to stop and disable any symantec/norton service.

Thanks Gents. I did finally get enough of NAV expunged to allow the installation of Trend Micro AV. Seems to be working good now.
