I recently decided to update to a new anti-virus program and have run into a problem.... I installed Trend Micro Anti-Virus which is recommended by the 'Geek Squad' at Best Buy. I had trouble with the original installation because it 'didn't like' the McAffee firewall program I was running. I uninstalled that and then was able to install the Trend. After install I found that I lost my internet (cable) connection. I talked to one of the Geeks who said bring it in for a quick look. He was able to get the internet connection going again after resetting some things in 'Winsock' which he said could have been affected by the Trend installation. I brought it home, hooked it up and it appeared to work for about 10 or 15 seconds before the connection was lost again. I tried re-booting and no luck. I'm running XP with SP2, IE6.0.2900 and my LAN shows as being connected @ 100 Mbps and firewalled. TCP/IP setting properties are 'obtain IP automatically' and 'obtain DNS server automatically', which I believe are the correct settings. When I open IE I get the 'cannot find server' message. I know the cable modem and connection is working because I'm writing this from my work laptop connected via wireless to the router fed by this same modem.

Make sure the firewall is allowing your browser(s) outbound permission.

Well I finally got my problem solved with some help from IYogi ($24.99 per incident). The guy knew his stuff. Anyway, using the msconfig utility, we were able to narrow down the offending piece of software that was blocking IE6 from working (in start up items). It is called MMS Manager - mmsman.exe and whatever it is, we could not erradicate it from the registry. Went into the registry, deleted it, come back to msconfig and there it was again. Luckily, it stays disabled in msconfig but I'd sure like to get rid of it. Anyone hear of this before?

mmsman.exe is malware. Suggest you post a log in the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.
