I don't think your question as stated makes sense...or at least I don't understand what you're saying.

I am not certain exactly what you mean either. Catalyst is the title of the drivers.

If you mean that when you go to Device Manager and look at the Properties of the display adapter, there is an option to "Update Drivers ". If you use this it will not "update" to the current version or earlier, it will just say the most recent version is already installed.

Until recently, for Windows XP, ATI (Catalyst) drivers were installed by Windows and ATI said to use those supplied with Windows. ATI have now released a new version for Windows XP.

If you don't have any specific problems with the graphics, just leave them as is. It can turn into a can of worms if there is any problem updating or reinstalling them.

    understanding radeon driver

I am trying to understand ati drivers but still am very confused by them. Take 2 examples:

    A. The first one is taken directly from the CCC of my current radeon 9250:

    B. The second is copied from the website I downloaded the driver from:

We have here confusing terms for the same product:

    catalyst version 6.5
    2D driver verssion 6.14.10.6614
    radeon display driver 8.252 (?)

Please pay attention to the Catalyst Control Center version it's different from (A) to (B).

I also not sure where this site get the driver, since amd.ati sebsite only offers catalyst up to 6.2(!).

The drivers and software in B are for an All-in-Wonder model. Note the "Multimedia Center Software" and "Remote Wonder 3.03 ".
In the left-hand panel of my first link, you will see All-in-Wonder/TV Wonder support:
    http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/aiwradeon-prer300-xp.html (for the 9200 model).

The drivers for a standard Radeon model and All-in-Wonder model are different.

I used my original drivers disk and installed the drivers and software, I then installed the driver download from my first link, there were no problems (so I am still using the original software).

Get your drivers from the original manufacturer of the graphics card (eg., Asus, MSI, etc) or use those from ATI.
    http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

The version numbers may differ if they are supplied by third party manufacturers (I might expect).

    ati radeon driver confusion?

    1. The driver from Diamond on the CD is version 5.13 is OK except the game gothic froze after 5-10 minutes.

    2. The driver from amd.ati official website is 6.2( the last ) is worse, it even makes the screen turn black and flicker every start-up.

    3. The driver that I currently use (v. 6.5) is very stable and I can play all the games I have(except gothic NOTR). It doesn't look like a third party driver since there is no indication of it. The website I downloaded this driver is: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?id=18

Also I believe that all in wonder is only a small part of it which didn't get installed when my card isn't a all in wonder.

    4. Also I have checked amd.ati website, all drivers ( including all in wonder) has version 6.2 as the most recent.

You obviously have problems with the drivers. I don't do much updating or reinstalling of drivers before I just remove the software and drivers completely and start installing all again from scratch.

I had problems with ATI drivers when I first installed my card on Win XP, so I might imagine that you have put a lot of time into trying to get them working correctly.

To completely remove the drivers, you could run through the method in the sticky at the start of this forum. I don't like "driver cleaners ", at least for graphics drivers. ATI have a driver uninstaller, which I would use instead.

Most of the rest of the method I use is the same. Boot into Safe Mode, uninstall the software in Add/Remove Programs and the drivers in Device Manager if they are still listed (also run the ATI uninstaller at this stage).

When you reboot into normal mode the hardware wizard will run. You can try directing it to the original drivers CD or click Cancel if Windows can't find the drivers and then run driver installation program when you get to the desktop.
[It is important to click Cancel if the drivers can't be found, the wrong ones may get installed otherwise.] Of course, the Windows Add New Hardware wizard won't install the software, only the drivers.
