    Hello All -

Firstly, I am using WinXP Pro and IE/OE6 (SP2) with MS's latest updates as of a week, or so, ago - I thiMk  .

Secondly, I have heard more than a few horror stories about allowing OE6 to "compact/compress" messages and some people losing their messages or having them corrupted. Especially, if an e-mail is being downloaded while the 'compacting/compressing' process is being done.

Since my default e-mail program is MailWasher Pro (v5.3), I don't believe I have to worry about OE downloading any e-mails while the "compacting/compressing" process is running. However . . . . . . . . . I don't have very much faith in MS since Win98SE!! Duh - I'm "old school" and schtoopid, I guess.

My question is this: If I allow OE6 to "compact and/or compress" my messages, am I running a risk of losing, corrupting or otherwise fouling them up if MailWasher Pro is doing its job and (for lack of a better term) "fielding" my e-mails as they come in and not exposing them directly to OE6?

As always :), any and all help is greatly appreciated!! TIA :D

Many thanks . . . . from the  dummy!!

You are right to be concerned and horror stories do abound.....

    Safe route ....

Back up all .dbx files, disconnect from the internet and compress (compact) the files manually through Tools > Options > Maintenance. If anything goes wrong you have a backup copy. Seem to remember there is an option in IE/OE6 to turn off automatic compacting.

Better still upgrade to IE 7 - OE then backs up all .dbx files to the Recycle Bin when compacting and compacting is done when OE is closed. Pretty sure that this feature was not an update to OE.

Current version of OE is 6.00.2900.2180

    BTW
    That is an antispam program.

Thanks for the post, Pete. I will definately take your advice under consideration. :)

    RE: MailWasher Pro
True ~ but MWP is set up so that OE can't download anything on its own.

I will, however, turn off the DSL router before doing any compacting just to be sure. Thanks again.
