slow computer, low cpu usage

Hello,

I'm trying to get my father in law's computer to speed up. If I log in safe mode, or safe mode with networking, everything's fine. But if I log in with his ID, the C-drive wants to run and run, slowing down the computer. I checked the cpu usage and it was only 3% to 6%.

I ran Ad-aware and AVG anti-spyware and picked up a few bad cookies, but not much else.

Can you take a look at the hijack this log below?

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.

I see you're running the new Trend Micro HijackThis! beta version. We in the forums prefer at this time not to use it, until they have ironed out all the wrinkles, so would you please download the older version, 1.99.1 and run a new log.

Please download HijackThis! SetUp from here. Save the file to your desktop.

Double-click the HijackThis! SetUp icon to begin the installation. Follow the prompts for the default install location of:'C:\Program Files\HijackThis'. Tick the 'Create a desktop' button when the option appears. Select next, then allow HijackThis! to start.

Once installed, please rename the hijackthes.exe to any name of your choice, as long as it is something other than hijackthis.exe. Vundo like to hide itself from HJT.

Then press the [Scan] button. You will notice the [Scan] button will turn into a [Save Log] button. Click the [Save Log] button and notepad will open up with the contents of the scan. Right-click in the saved log, and select 'copy'. Then proceed to your original thread, unless otherwise instructed and click the '[Reply]' button and paste the saved contents to be reviewed. Do not make any modifications to the log or perform any 'fixes' until told to do so.

Some progress

I disabled Dragon Naturally Speaking auto start and the bulk of the problem has gone away. I also re-ran Spybot, AVG, and Ad-Aware.

But the question becomes, how do I monitor applications that start automatically? Are these policies? And how do I edit the list?

OK, I have looked over your log and there are no indications of malware. We can fix a couple of minor items tho.

As you seem to have figured out what was sucking up CPUs, we can assume this case is closed.

With regards to start up items and how to control them, I strongly recommend WinPatrol 2007 v11.2.2007.

To see which processes don't really need to be running at start up go to AnswersThatWork
Just go to the appropriate letter, and search for the process/exe, they will give good detailed info regarding it, we use it quite often. If you can't find it there, then use Google.


For those items to fix:

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. same problem back

When I logged in this morning, it was slow again.

The Dragon Naturally Speaking is not starting at startup, but the C-drive is working like crazy again, slowing everything down. What makes me think this is malware is that it only happens with one ID, and only when the ID is logged in normally. It doesn't happen in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking.

Anything you can suggest would be swell.

Ok, there was no need for a second log, as the entries we fixed are gone.

And I see lots of stuff that does not need to be running, and they cold be slowing things down.

The only thing I can suggest is as I did before.

If you're convinced it is malware, we can look a bit deeper.

Please download SilentRunners from here

Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
Silent Runners will ask if you want to skip the supplementary search.
Please select 'No' to include them.
Then select 'Yes' to confirm the search.
When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop.
