Running IE7 w\Vista. I have the scroll wheel on my mouse configured to go back to previous web page with a push. On a lot of pages, I can push till the cows come home and nothing happens. I get the same results with selecting the "back" arrow in the upper left corner of the browser. By using the small "down" arrow, I have found a check marked line like "http:\ads.<some jerk site>. How do I skip over that without manually expanding that menu and choosing the correct page? I have a hosts file installed and popup blocker.
    Thanks.

Some sites simply are designed to not allow the use of the back button. It helps keep you there a little longer.

I have IE 7 on XP SP2, so not sure if this would work the same in Vista.

I found that checking the box, in Internet Options, Advanced tab, security section: 'allow active content to run in files on my computer', then if there are those ads URLs in the list, the back button gracefully steps over them (or rather, since the ads URLs are in my HOSTS files) flips through them in the blink of an eye). Anyway, the back button takes me to the previous 'proper' URL.

Checking that box changes the following in the registry:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDOWN
value iexplore; data changed from 1 (box unchecked) to 0 (box checked).

I have not been able to find a reason why that works (for me), I found it accidentally.
I expect that experts will grumble that I have reduced the security features of IE by doing this. :).
Spybot S &D also flagged the change in the registry, so I excluded that detection from its scans.

I'm not sure what the repercussions will be but it worked for me also. It takes an extra click or two, but at least I can get back to where I started. Thanks for the info...
