my compaq presario notebook had probs loading past the the windows logo and i took out the hard drive to remove files from it before i reformatted it with the recovery cds. I bought a usb to ide cable and for the hard drive(toshiba 2.5in) and i got my files off the hard drive but when i put the hard drive back into the notebook and ran the hard drive self test it says no IDE device found and i take the hard drive back out and use the usb cable again and the hard drive works so its not broken. then i formatted the drive so its empty and put it back in and it still wont work. HELP! is there a way i get the hardrive to work just enough to run the recovery cds? or can i install theos when its pluged up thru the usb? i dunno its frustrating!!

It sounds like when you're putting the drive back in you're not doing it properly. Double check the connections.

Hi (welcome to the BBS BTW)

What is the model number of the laptop? Maybe we can find a procedure at Compaq/HP.

Did you change the jumper after moving the drive?

I helped a friend reinstall Windows on a model 3000 (it has already had the motherboard replaced once). For some reason at startup it goes to a blank screen with a blinking cursor, the only way it will continue is to press the F1 key. I was able to reformat and reinstall Windows, but still, every time it starts up the F1 key needs to be pressed.

Looking at the links for a 2525US model at Compaq/HP, there are some checks and instructions, for example:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...c=us&dlc=en&product=242214&rule=41800&lang=en
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...c=us&dlc=en&product=242214&rule=42176&lang=en

    Hope it's something simple.

 ok the links didnt work either, let me rephrase my problem: my notebook(correction v2000) is not tecognizing my toshiba hard drive(it came with the notebook) even in the bios hard drive self test it says no ide device and above that it says no diagnostics provided. so what do u guys think? i checked the connections, wats next in the trouble shooting line? also what are jumpers.

If you didn't change anything on the hard drive then you didn't move a jumper if there is one.

I was sort of hoping that Whiskeyman's suggestion would solve it, but could not see why a jumper would need to be changed :(

The drive works connected through a USB connection, it doesn't work as the main drive. I don't think the format style (NTFS or FAT32) would have any influence. When I worked on my friend's machine, the HDD diagnostics in the BIOS also said that there were no IDE devices attached, then I Exited and when it went to a blank screen with the flashing cursor, pressed the F1 key. What happens if you try to boot through to the HDD do you get a blank screen (or flashing cursor)?

I can only think that it may be a problem with the IDE controller. Off chance, look at upgrading the BIOS.

I went to the Toshiba website (my friend's also had a Toshiba drive), there was no specific HDD diagnostic software available, they referred you to the BIOS diagnostic menu. If you get to a blank screen, try F1 (F2 or any other key for that matter).

I can't think of many other avenues. Maybe look up the local Compaq repairer (you will find them from the support website www.hp.com/support), drop around and show it to them. They might have a "quick fix ", but might also say it needs a new motherboard.

Strange situation but I'd be hard pressed to go beyond a bad cable or bad connection. Don't forget, that 44 pin connector also holds power connections to the drive. I'd replace the cable before going much further. One could also unplug and replug a couple few times at both ends to be pretty confident that the connections are good. Make sure the red stripe is on pin #1.

    ;)
