My firewall's license expires in November, and I don't want to renew. Comodo seems to be the only free firewall that is neither a relic from yesteryear nor a stripped-down version of whoever's real firewall. Alas, Comodo clashes with my explorer.exe, frequently causing the system to partially hang. Using 2000, Windows Firewall, Defender, and One Care are not options for me. Since I do have a DSL router, can I just rely on its firewall and nix the software firewall altogether?

I'd opt for the Kerio "free" version which while somewhat stripped down, is still a great firewall.

What about ZoneAlarm. It's free (go to download.com) and it is continuously rated #1 firewall. This does not include the virus or spyware scanner ZoneAlarm offers.

Quick interjection: Do we even need a software firewall if we have a powerful firewall that's in the Linksys routers, for example??? If so, why?
