Why are you shouting? Typing in capitals on the internet is considered shouting and can upset people-use your capslock key.

You do not say what system you are runniing and you do not mention your version of Windows Media Player.

On my version 8 with Windows XP you would need to go to menu item Tools. Choose options and File Types and then select Video file. However I am not aware if this is the same in earlier versions though you could browse and see. In my case I would need to select it if I wanted to play AVI files with Windows media Player

Still can't play 'avi' file on Windows Media Player

Sorry about the caps 'HumBug'. I have windows 2000 xp professional edition. i followed your instructions, and still nothing. my computer thinks the movie is a song and only plays the sound, although it recognizes the file as a video clip.
Heres the deal. my friend copied the movie from his disc to mine. we have the same system, but it wont play on my media player. should i just call dell or take my computer into a computer store to fix the problem? and whats the deal with the 'error downloading codecs' message. IVE DOWNLOADED FIFTY MILLION CODECS SOFTWARE ONTO MY COMUTER!!! (sorry). I just dont understand what the problem is.

    Still stumped...

You say you have downloaded "50 MILLION" codecs, but have you downloaded (and installed) the latest DivX codec from DivX.com, version number 5.02.
If you have you should have the DivX Player on your start menu next to the settings for the Codec, try to open the file with that in stead of Windows Media Player... I've found that WMP isn't always too happy about some files that work fine with DivX Player or MicroDVD.

And on a side note. I don't think that you will get much help from Dell on DivX, since most movies distributed as .avi files are under copyright protection, which means that you (in a very extreme case) might get in legal trouble.... would be different if it was a DVD movie which didn't work for you.
