That's it basically. It's considered a 'critical update' but for yonks I've had to hide it, because it will never install! I had another go recently, and it is bugging the hell out of me. I've tried the stuff on the Microsoft site to repair this issue, but it's hellishly complicated and never seems to work anyway... I've uninstalled .Net framework 1.1 and reinstalled it, to no avail - I still cannot update it. Has anyone got a nice simple fix for this?

    Uninstall Net framework

There is a hard to find Microsoft Tool to completly remove net framework installs.
I had trouble installing a Norton Systemworks product with xp sp2
This Microsoft tool was needed to completly remove the net framework

tool can be found at :

Many thanks visionof. There are three tools in the download. I'm running Win XP Pro SP2 - on a standalone laptop, not 64 bit, or anything complicated like that - I take it I select the -X86 version to run?

Am I advised to run it in safe mode, or should it be OK to run as a normal ap?

(I would also note that recently, when I try to activate safe mode via msconfig I find that although it will do so, I get a warning message that I am denied access to something (unspecified) and that I may need administrator privileges - but I am administrator (or, at least, I always was!))

I'm sorry visionof - but the files appear simply to be installation of security update for .Net Framework 2 - which I already have, and which is not the issue. They are not a cleanup tool for .Net Framework 1.1

The two versions of .Net Framework are, anyway, quite independent of each other, to the best of my knowledge.

    OK Folks - it works!

You have to use add/remove programs to remove all versions of .Net Framework you may have before using the tool. I also ran CCleaner a few times (Issues and junk removal) to be sure, and restarted. Then run the tool. It claims not to have worked. But it does well enough. Using Windows Update does not give you the option of installing .Net Framework 1.1 - so the tool must have left some references to it behind. But if you find it on the Microsoft site you can install it manually. And then, wonder of wonders, if you find the SP1 service pack for it manually, you can install that successfully, too. I can't wait to find out if I can install the security update to that as well. I'm going to try via Microsoft Update, again... I'll keep you informed...:)

By the way - I had to 'repair' Network Magic, too - but that is no big issue - I don't think anything else stopped working.

    .Net Framework Problems Over

Yesss! A veritable result! I can now also install the 'critical' security update for .Net Framework 1.1, SP1 - normally via Microsoft Update.

Strongly recommend you post this thread as a Sticky for all those who have trouble with .Net Framework (it should work with other versions, too - though I haven't tried)
    Best
