I ran Windows Update till the computer could update no more..haha. Now the computer is extremely sluggish on start up and shut down. Some programs will also not run. Is there anything in my Hijack file you can see that may be a problem? I am also trying to get my dad to remove some programs. He wants to keep limewire but thinks Kazaa(which he does not want) may still be hiding somewhere!

    Hi Brinic
First let me say if you keep using limewire you will be back here over and over and over again.

Not to be mean, but we are volunteers and we do this to help people that have accidentally became infected, we are not a "personal" cleaning web site for those who have been warned not to keep using sites that WILL infect your system. Your dad needs to stop using limewire

OK,That said, I would like to see a uninstall list.

To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
    • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
    • Click "Open Uninstall Manager "
    • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
    • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

    Please post this log.

    Thanks
    Geri

    Hi Brinic
Any time you are doing P2P file sharing there is a very good chance that you will pick up nasties. It's the "get something for nothing ", but in this case it's getting something along with something you don't want.
My advise, If you want something, Buy It.

I also have a question, I know TeMerc gave you a list of spyware programs you could download, these are good programs that are free.
Why did you install these instead?
    SpyKiller <<This one is questionable
    System Soap Pro
    SpySpotter3

These are all Rouge programs, and we will need to remove them.
    See Here.
    http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

    ---------------------------------------------

Now lets start cleaning you up.

    Jotti File Submission:
    • Please go to Jotti's malware scan
    • Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan "box on the top of the page:
      • C:\WINDOWS\lwxwtcz.exe
    • Click on the submit button

Please do the same for these two files also.

      C:\WINDOWS\danyxkr.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\xopghsr.exe

    • Please post the results in your next reply.

    Thanks
    Geri

    Jotti File Submission

When I follow your instructions I get the following message:

The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file.

Is there a setting that is not right or are those files now gone?

I did not put those programs on their computer. I believe my father did before I put AVG, AD-Aware and Spybot on. I'm just trying to clean up his mess. He's not great with computers so I will not scold him for too long. I will give him a stern verbal warning though..hah

    Hi Brinic
No they are there, so we will get rid of them now.

    OK Sorry, We'll fix them.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
    • Save it to your desktop.
    • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
    • Select:
      • Delete on Reboot
      • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

      C:\WINDOWS\lwxwtcz.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\danyxkr.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\xopghsr.exe

    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Then please look in your All programs for these and see if they have a uninstall located with them.
    SpyKiller
    System Soap Pro
    SpySpotter System Defender

    If not then go to
    Start> My Computer > C: Drive >Program Files

Find them Right click and click delete.

Please post a new HJT log.

    Thanks
    Geri

    New HJT Log

I followed your directions and used killbox. I had to copy and paste the one by one as the clipboard option did not work. I only got the PendingFileRenameOperations prompt when I tried to run the first file twice. I could not find any trace of the programs that we deleted on my computer. They were hihind somewhere. I believe they are now gone though but I have been wrong before! Thanks for all the help.

I will get back to you tomorrow evening (Thursday).

    Hi Brinic

    OK, Lets try this way.

Enable the 'Show Hidden Files/Folders' option, like this:
    Click Start.
    Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

    Now
Click on Start – Search – All Files and Folders "“ Put, SpyKiller in "All or part of the file name" spot. Scroll down and click on "More advanced options" Put a check on "Search system foldersâ€, Search hidden files and Folder" Search SubFolders. Click Search.
Right click on any SpyKiller Folders on the right side and click delete.

    Do the same for these...
    System Soap Pro
    SpySpotter3

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

    Close HJT.

    Reboot into safe mode.
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore "), please delete these folders (if present):

    C:\Program Files\SpyKiller
    C:\Program Files\SpySpotter3

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore "), please delete these files (if present):

    C:\WINDOWS\danyxkr.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\xopghsr.exe
    C:\PROGRAM fILES\SYSTEM32\soap.exe
<< Also check the "SYSTEM" Folder

    After that, Reboot.

Please post a New HJT Log into this Thread.

    New HJT Log

Followed your instructions but could not get into safe mode as the keyboard and mouse shut down upon pressing F8 but I did the explorer search despite and found nothing. The computer is still sluggish but that may just be a dell/dad thing!

    Thanks
    Jen

    Hi Brinic
    OK That scan looks good.

You can delete any tools you were asked to download, (KillBox) There will be newer versions if ever needed again any way.

Here is what is left to do.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

We need to turn off and on system restore

You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the System Restore tab will not be displayed.
Turning off System Restore will clear out all previous restore points.

To turn off Windows XP System Restore:
NOTE: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK.
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
    5. Click Apply.
    6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
    7. Click OK.
    8. Restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.

To turn on Windows XP System Restore:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives. "
    5. Click Apply, and then click OK
    Make a new restore point.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
    1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

    2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

    3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

    4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

    5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 23,000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all,
and MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

    6. Install WinPatrol to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine

Now just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly.

    7. Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

    8. ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only, Cleans out temporary files all the garbage you collect while surfing the web.

    9. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

    10. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
    11. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
