A few days ago i put a dvd into my cdrom, it got jammed in there, i had to open it using a pin, since then its completey dead, there is not sign of the cdrom drive in the device manager or in the bios, so i just carried on using my external liteon dvdwriter, now there is no sign of that on my pc, the power is fine on that have tested it on another pc, could it be my motherboard? thanks in advance:)

    lynette00 - Welcome to the Board :)

If your drive is not recognised in the BIOS there is every possibility that it has failed - this may be the reason for the DVD jamming in the first place. By jamming I take it that the tray would not open on the button? If you have access to another computer you could try the drive in that to confirm.

Have you tried the external drive in another USB port? Does the port into which the drive is normally plugged recognise other USB devices such as a pen drive?

BTW - we are all volunteers here so patience is the name of the game :) Bear in mind that this is a worldwide BBS and you need to take into account the time differences and the fact that the majority of members are based in the United States.

thankyou for your reply, yes thats correct it would not come out with the eject button...have tryed different USB ports for the external, but still nothing,..tried the external on another pc and works fine. i dont no if i am to confident taking the the cdrom drive out might leave it for a expert...would a fresh install of windows at least get the external up going. its really strange how the both arent regonised, yet they are two seperate drives.

May be coincidence or the two problems are connected.

It is far too soon to consider a repair install of Windows....

IMHO the DVD/CD-ROM drive has probably failed as it is not seen in the BIOS so that is a separate issue.

    You did not respond to
If it does not then go into Device Manager and Uninstall all the components under Universal Serial Bus controllers (right click on entry > Uninstall). Reboot and Windows will re-install all the USB controllers and Root Hubs. This may resolve the problem with the external drive.

Now's a good time to learn! Power down the unit and pull the cover off the PC. Reseat the CD ROM cable and power cable. The power cable is a 4 pin connector and will reconnect easily. The CD ROM is a 40 pin connector and will reconnect just as easily. It could be the drive lost its reference point to ground. As mentioned previously, uninstall the USB ports and reboot, Windows will go out and find the ports.

Glad to hear that the 'simple' fix worked for you :)
Massive storage device ?? - what is this

BTW - a red cross indicates that the item has been disabled - right click on it and select Enable from the menu presented.

In the device manager under universal serial bus controllers it says usb mass storage device... but since i deleted all of them and rebooted there is now no red cross.
