Hello everyone and WindowsBBS! I am back!

Anyway, my old computer is having a problem recently booting up. (Windows ME - on a HP Pavilion XT853 (853 MHz, 128 MB Ram, About 40 GB HD).

Well, for the past few months, it has posted this on a black screen (Like DOS) in White System Lettering:

Please wait while Setup updates your configuration files.
This may take a few minutes...

Windows could not upgrade one or more system files before starting.
Windows may not start or run properly.

If Windows fails to start, run SETUP again.

    Press any key to continue

    _

Thats what it says. You hit a key, and Windows sucessfully boots, and runs fine (Without talking about the annoying McAfee Update box - but lets save that for another time. It has just started doing this, and it does it about once every 3-4 start-ups. I have no idea what is going on, although I know the machine inside and out. I tried doing a Windows Update, but it did not resolve the problem.

    Any help?

    Thanks!
    ~Jake~:)

What is the annoying McAfee problem? Maybe this is the cause of the other problem.

Everytime you turn on the computer it pops up a white box saying something simular to:
    ---
McAfee has updated itself, and your computer will need to be restarted to install these updates.

    >Restart Now
    > Continue with what I am doing.
    ---

I went to the program files and turned off alerts, but it still pops up. The program is outdated, anyway (Came off a disk called ANTI-VIRUS DEFENSE 2005 By Circuit City Powered by: McAfee). Its been on the PC before, but that was when we had dial up and it couldnt connect to update much. After reinstalling ME and it, it is now on Cable internet all the time, so it updates when it turns on. But i don't see how. You can turn the PC on, and restart it when that pops up. Then it starts downloading again, and 30 seconds later it comes back.

I can get exact wording of it (McAfee box) if nessisary.

Uninstall McAfee. Make sure you use another anti-virus program after removing it.

Look for a file named Wininit.Ini, located in the windows folder, and rename it or delete it. This is the file responsible for the files being updated at startup, and seems to be corrupted.
Normally when it is run successful, it is renamed by the system to Wininit.Bak so that it won't be run again at next boot.
