In Windows XP, it looks like the windows automatic updates are leaving behind an annoying litter trail consisting of folders named with a bunch of random characters, each containing a log file. See the thread below for an example...

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=59879

....Anyway, I am getting about 40 of these a month. They all get dumped into my c: (root directory). Is there a way I can either stop this happening altogether, or at least, change where these useless bloody files are stored?

Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks!

Hello stanbridge and welcome to the Board,

I don't know of a way to do either.

My suggestion is to either delete them or copy them out and place somewhere else if you want to keep them.

Personally I would have no interest in keeping them, MS keeps track of the updates and the sequence in the hidden folder \Windows\$hf_mig$

    Well, something isn't right.

1st, MS isn't sending 40 updates a month. 2nd if the installer runs properly, these folders should be deleted. So you may want to post some more details on what it is exactly what you are seeing.

Thanks for the reply guys. I've been moving them into a folder to keep to show people (like in this thread) for now. Here's what the latest one looks like:

    Folder Name: b00e0d9ccccbd7337c

    File inside folder: msxml4-KB927978-enu.log

Click here to download a copy of the log file.

I don't know if this is exactly what you were after but if there's any other info I can give that would help with a solution, let me know. Again, any help is very much appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Hello stanbridge,

As Arie wrote, the MS installer is not cleaning up after itself.

See if the MS article on this particular patch clears up the problem.
