Hi, Can anyone shed some light on this intermittent problem that I am having here.
On shut down the PC goes through the processes of closing down save settings Windows is shutting down and that is as far as it goes, it does not automatically reboot or anything it just stays there hangs there and only pressing power button for the 4 seconds will finish the job.
I have googled and tried some but no luck sound file is ok.

It is possible that some program is trying to close down but does not make it because it has been corrupted. Did you look at the event manager to see what is happening before you turn it off manually? Try running "eventvwr.msc" (no quotes) and see what is happening.

    Hi Hawk,

Right click on My Computer, then Manage.
On the left you will see Event Viewer. Expand that (click on the plus sign).

Then click on System. See if there are any errors being logged by the system when the problem occurs.

Right clicking on a line and then clicking on Properties will give you a window with more info concerning that line. You'll see in the top section right below the down arrow, a text graphic symbol. Clicking on that will place the error info text into your clipboard (memory). Bring up Notepad and right click and paste, that will transfer it to Notepad. You can then paste the text into your next post here.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Hawk,

SidebySide is a low grade form of malware:
    http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2005-070514-5200-99

Follow the instructions below and post the HJT log in the Removing Spyware & Viruses section for someone to look at.

Please download HijackThis! SetUp from http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HJTsetup.exe
Save the file to your desktop.

Double-click the HijackThis! SetUp icon to begin the installation.

Follow the prompts for the defualt install location of:'C:\Program Files\HijackThis'.

Tick the 'Create a desktop' button when the option appears.

Select next, then allow HijackThis! to start.

    Then press the [Scan] button.
You will notice the [Scan] button will turn into a [Save Log] button.
Click the [Save Log] button and notepad will open up with the contents of the scan.
Right-click in the saved log, and select 'copy'.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles,
I have posted the Log in Removing Virus and Malware, waiting for results.
I did run AVG Anty Spyware, but it did not find anything apart from a few Cookies. My Anty Vir is also not finding anything.
The only thing that I can think off that I did do is not to far back I did a little Registry edit I had my Optical drive missing in My Computer, and I followed the MS Resolution that worked fine everything was working after the re-boot.

    Hi Hawk,

I noticed your thread here: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=63835

The shutdown problem appears to have been coincidental with the SideBySide problem.

    Regards - Charles

    Yes, you can do that.

Have you tried shutting down things you don't need to be running at bootup and making them on demand? One of your apps may the culprit.

Hi Charles, well I have made no progress I shut down most of the programs at start up, I just finished a Repair Install with a different Windows CD the repair completed fine no problems at all, but still no shut down. The Restart that windows performes during the install goes ok but after Windows is installed it wont go. I have one more question though I have made a Slipstreamed XP-Pro CD and it worked for the Install, but now when looking in Control Panel Add-Remove SP2 is not listed anymore as a installed program, is that how it should be or does that mean the sleapstream did not work.

    Hi Hawk,

My Computer > left panel > View System Information > General tab, it should say XP version and Service Pack 2. Another indicator is the blue "boxcar" lights on bootup - pre SP2 it's yellow.

I would say the reason that SP2 isn't in Add/Remove is because the uninstall routine isn't there anymore: \Windows\$NtUninstallServicePack$ - This is a hidden folder. I don't have it either because I deleted it long ago.

To be accurate here, I've never done an install with a slip streamed cd, but from the results, I think it worked and I would say that is normal.

    Regards - Charles

    Two more thoughts.

On SP2: If you think about it, a current XP cd is a SP2 slip streamed cd along with all the patches up to that point. And if installed, no SP2 Add/Remove line.

On shutdown: If Whiskeyman's remedy doesn't work and if you think you've eliminated background processes, then I would start thinking hardware, what's plugged into the system or the video card.

I don't know if you've seen this or not: http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

Hi thanks, Yes Charles I had a look there and it tells me that SP2 is installed, so that is great that it worked.
But no Whiskeyman I downloaded and installed but unfortunateley no change.
Thing is it will shut down in Safe Mode with no hesitation.
I am starting to think about a fresh install I have plenty of room on the C: drive to create a new partition to install into that and make that C: then delete the old Windows, this way I should not loose anything or have to reinstall programs.
Am I right there with this Idea would it work??

You would end up with a dual boot - you can't make the 2nd partition C.

If you want a fresh install, copy off your data, and then clean install on the current C.

While you're at it, create a 2nd partition for data only. That would go a long way in avoiding this kind of mess where data is lost http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=63959

    Clean install http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

    Don't forget this part:

Well thank you Charles, lucky for me I don't have to do it now. After many hours of trying this and that, I finally stumbled over the Culprit, it was my Nero InCD that went corrupt I was attempting to send some files to In CD when the In CD Icon was not in the SendTo Menu. I ended up installing the Nero update for Nero 7 and after that when a reboot was needed to complete the install it did it itself.
Problem Fixed. "So Easy Yet So Hard "
Thanks to everyone for they're help.
