Hi. This is my first posting on this site so i hope it all works out alright.

I tried to clean up my computer today, but when i went to run disk Defragmenter, it said

"Disk Fragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on
the volume: (C:). Please run Chkdsk /f.
    ".

So i went and attempted to run Disk Check but an error message came up that didn't allow me to finish it saying

"Windows was unable to complete disk check "
    or
"This disk check could not be performed because the disk check
utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk.
These files can be accessed only by restarting Windows. Do you
want to schedule this disk check to occur the next time you restart
    the computer?
    "

depending on if I checked the box to automatically fix the errors. Even then i figured ok i can do this, so i told it "yes" to do it when i restarted, tried restarting the computer and nothing happened except the same problems when i tried to do it again.

I tried doing the same procedure just different ways like using command prompt to do it there and i got this:

    "Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Brian's Comp>chkdsk /f
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) y

This volume will be checked the next time the system restarts.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Brian's Comp>chkdsk
The type of the file system is NTFS.

So that is where I am at. I have been going in circles calling up anyone i know that knows anything about computers and getting nowhere else further than this so i hope someone could maybe help. Thank you in advance.

Sounds like some serious problems with your hard drive. Try downloading the free diagnostics from the website of your hard drive manufacturer and run them to see what you get.

You can try running chkdsk from the Windows CD. When you boot to the CD, select R to go to the Repair Console. Enter the number of Windows installation. Enter the Administrator password (make sure it is blank if there wasn't one).

Chkdsk /? shows the commands (chkdsk /r and chkdsk /p).

Thanks for the help both of you. I tried doing everything i could on my own but finally just gave in and brought it to my Campus' Technology department and had them run some diagnostics on it. Needless to say the diagnostics failed and they said to back everything up ASAP and get a new harddrive. Earlier today i called Dell Support and went through everything with them and did even more tests only to come to the same conclusion. Luckily my comp is still under warrentee so they are sending out a replacement part AND a technician to put it in!!! lol took an hour and a half of talking to them but I think it was worth it in the end. Thanks.

    ~Brian:)
