XP was cooperative to a scan with sfc. Now come Vista! Using Cmd window it indicates "You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility." Being a Beginner I don't know about running a Console Session.

I have two accounts, Administrator Mudd and Guest. Both are active.

Help with this would be appreciated.

Don't guess I can get there from here! Followed the lady's information and didn't see "Run As Administrator in right click. "

Followed what you said was "easiest way" and couldn't get there. Could be that I'm thick headed and can't follow instructions! No, I did what you said and I get the same answer as I posted.

I'm searching from here to there for the Administrator's Console.

    Hi Mudd,

I tried it in non-admin mode.

Type CMD into Vista's search area at the bottom left. Then cmd.exe comes up, right click on it. One of the options is Run As Admin, click on that. Then the UAC "must have permission to continue" message should appear.

    Regards - Charles

Or when you've typed cmd in Vista's Start menu, just hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter. This will give you the UAC prompt to run CMD in Admin. mode.

Not well. When I type "cmd" the result is "C:\Windows\system32" as opposed to what you said.

Arie: Followed your instructions and a window tried to open but never did. Tried twice, same.

I imagine I should wait until someone comes up with a reg hack for old guys like me. I seem never to get the hang of things.

Different subject, but I'm well pleased with Vista. Only had it a week and it was a little difficult for me to find my way around. Now I've got a desk-full of icon shortcuts. Will leave them for a while to let soak in. Removed Atch, wrong one.

    Hi Mudd,

Well, maybe the difference is Arie, I think, and I are running Ultimate and you're running Home? But that's speculation on my part at this point.

Your correct, Home. I bought it for Grouch as she was still on an old one with slow process and starved for RAM. Gave her the Red A** because I did and and refused to take it. Fine with me as I now have two, a loaded XP and this one is almost at the top with goodies. Women, especially Old Women that have had their way for so many years. She better be glad we can't go back and do it again!!

May have found what I'm looking for. I can't get the "Run as Administrator." Where is that action? I try to run it as Mudd and nothing, absolutely nothing happens. Believe if I could find the Run As....... the sfc would go maybe. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228

Yes, and the instructions are the same in the link as the one I gave you in post #4:
That's the way it should work, and I'm mystified why you're not seeing that.

Had to take the entire Desktop because the result from right clicking window wouldn't print. This is different from yesterday.

No, this is the same accross all versions.

    See the image below.

Type cmd in the Search box on the start menu. Once you typed it there, you can either choose the shortcut I explained (hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter), or as I've show in the picture below, right-click on the 'result' cmd.exe shown in the start menu, and choose Run as administrator from the contect menu.

The picture made it more clear. I was in the Classic Start Menu and that was a little confusing. Now that I see the Vista Start and Search, all is clear. Run the scan. Reported some problems I've got to try to clear up.

Thank you Arie and Charles for leading me on this.

I've got Home Premium and when I try "type cmd, press Ctrl/Shift/Enter," a folder opens.

However, if I go to Start>All Programs>Accessories and right click on "Command prompt," the "Run as administrator option" is available.
