Explorer.exe is using all of my CPU. Running virus scans finds Trojan.Spaxe, Trojan.Packed.9, Downloader, and Vundo Trojan. Where do I start to clean this up?

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.

Here is how we like to begin our analysis of your pc:

For starters, if you do not have them yet, please DL and run AdAware & Spybot Search & Destroy. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy are 2 of the most trusted apps in the security area. They are both free, compliment each other nicely, and do not use a lot of resources. They can be found here:

    Spybot Search & Destroy v.1.4
    AdAware SE Free v1.06r

With AdAware and Spybot: DL, follow the install instructions, check for updates, then scan, repair/remove/quarantine anything found. Reboot before next scan with whichever app is next. The reason for running these apps, is to clean up some of the other 'crapware' on your pc, which, in turn, will make deciphering your HJT log, easier.

    Then we use HiJackThis v1.99.1
Please download HijackThis! SetUp from here. Save the file to your desktop.

Double-click the HijackThis! SetUp icon to begin the installation. Follow the prompts for the default install location of:'C:\Program Files\HijackThis'. Tick the 'Create a desktop' button when the option appears. Select next, then allow HijackThis! to start.

Then press the [Scan] button. You will notice the [Scan] button will turn into a [Save Log] button. Click the [Save Log] button and notepad will open up with the contents of the scan. Right-click in the saved log, and select 'copy'. Then proceed to your original thread, unless otherwise instructed and click the '[Reply]' button and paste the saved contents to be reviewed. Do not make any modifications to the log or perform any 'fixes' until told to do so.

Ok, looks like an SDBot type of infection. We have a special tool for that. We'll also change the file name for HJT, just in case Vundo is trying to hide.

Please do as instructed below in the order presented.

First thing I'd like you to do is to rename the HijackThis executable, hijackthis.exe to <anything of your choice> .exe, as long you change it's name.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
    • Choose your usual account.
    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
    • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

My computer is running fine right now. The explorer.exe file is gone and I don't see this problem. Both Norton and XoftSpySE say the Vundo Trojan is still there. What should I do next?

We need to run the Vundo tool now.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click *VundoFix.exe* to run it.
    • Click the *Scan for Vundo* button.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the *Remove Vundo* button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click *YES*
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click *OK*.
    • Please post the contents of C:\*vundofix.txt* and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the *Scan for Vundo* button." when
    VundoFix appears at reboot.

Ok, reg keys are harmless unless there is a file associated with it. And in so far as XoftSpy, there are far more dependable app out there, it's not exactly a leader when it comes to spyware detection\removal. Please give me the path in the registry it points to.

We have some remnants remaining to get.

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

    GRrrr....

I let one slip by me, apologies for that.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
    Click Start.
    Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

Open 'My Computer' and select the 'Search' feature. Then click the 'All files and folders' button. Click the 'More advanced search options' button and be sure the 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders' and 'Search subfolders' boxes are check marked then search for and delete, if found, (some may not be present after previous steps) the following files/folders:
    C:\Windows\system32\winsyr.exe<<<--this file

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

    O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Task Reader] winsyr.exe

Reboot the machine into normal mode.

Also, can you please give me the exact location of that unique data entry,m is it HKLM, HKCU, I need to know the exact location of which hive it's in so I can direct you to delete the value.

Ok, we'll search for it then with a special tool.

Download Bobbi Flekman's RegSearch from here

Create a folder for RegSearch on the C: drive called C:\RegSearch. You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C:, then right click and select 'New' then 'Folder' and name it 'RegSearch'. Extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.

Open the RegSearch folder and double-click the icon for RegSearch.exe to launch the program.
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

    uniqdata

    Then hit Ok

After completion Notepad will be opened with all the found instances of the string(s). The resulting file is saved in the same location as RegSearch.exe. Post those results back here for me to review.

Click the 'Start' button, select 'Run', hit 'Enter'.

When box appears, type 'regedit', hit 'Enter'.

Navigate to the following key, by unticking the '+' next to each subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\UniqData

In the left hand side of the window, look for:
    UniqData

    Right-click it, and select 'Delete'.

    Close registry editor.

XoftSpy scan should come up clean now.

Everything is running well now and I don't get any virus from XoftSpySE or Norton.

    Thanks

Is there anything else I should do?

Glad to hear all is running as it should be, nice work.

Now just a couple of minor final steps and our recommendations.

delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Now that you have regained control of your machine, lets keep it clean. Please follow the links below to ensure the highest possible level of protection against any further invasions. The links and the apps are some of the most highly regarded apps in the field of security/protection & detection. Run AdAware & Spybot at least once a week, depending on your surfing habits.
    Spybot Search & Destroy v1.4
    Ad-Aware SE Free v1.06r

With AdAware and Spybot: DL, install then check for updates, then scan, repair/remove/quarantine anything found. Reboot before next scan with whichever app is next.

SpywareBlaster will prevent known ActiveX installs, by setting killbits into the registry.
With Spyware Blaster, just DL, check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using 'Restricted Sites' protection in SpywareBlaster nor the 'Immunize' feature in Spybot, you can get far greater coverage with IE-SPYADs, listed below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IE-SPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being installed on your machine install WinPatrol 2007 v11.1.2007.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

Tutorials for all can be found on my site as well.

Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:
    Calendar of Updates

Subscribe to update alerts for all the above security apps here.

You can also see my own ongoing security testing with all the above apps proving how securely you can safe with them installed.

    Happy surfing!
