Safe mode with command prompt results in same screen as safe mode

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system 32\DRIVERS\compbatt.sys

    etc etc

    Then nothing....

Power Off, remove your main laptop battery, reconnect the power cord and try it again with no battery. Again, its important that no peripherals or external devices are connected. What happens?

Followed your latest instruction, went immediately to screen apologising for inconvenience. I chose safe mode and low and behold we have lift off!

I now appear to be in safe mode.

    What should I do now?

Go back and re-read what Charlesvar, PeteC and Noahdfear advised and follow their instructions. I think the important thing is to try to do a system restore if at all possible and either Pete or Charles gave you instructions on doing this from a command prompt. While you are at it, don't forget to do what Noahdfear said as this may give us further information if this becomes a difficult fix. I'll turn this back over to the triple threat mind trust at this point as I'm going to be out of pocket for a few hours.

    Be patient and good luck.

    ;)

I have been able to do a system restore from safe mode, things seem to be fine.

I haven't yet re-fitted the battery, I was thinking that the battery might have been the problem.

    Should I re-fit the battery?

Do I need to run through the various suggested fixes now that I have managed a system restore?

    Many thanks.

    Hi alleycat,

If everything is fine, then no more fixes :)

From what you wrote in your 1st post, the culprit appears to have been an MS patch. SR rolled your system back prior to the patch.

I assume that on the next MS Update access, you will be asked to install patches again. Stay away from KB925902 for the time being. Do you have the RealTek console installed?

If you haven't already, change the AU options to Notify before downloading/Updating and uncheck the one for KB925902. For the others, do one at a time with at least a day between.

    Regards - Charles

    Thanks Charles

Just out of curiousity, how does removing the battery allow a restart if it isn't faulty?

In words of one syllable please

    :)

    Hi alleycat,

It forces what's known as a "hard" reboot. Because laptops have a battery, if the system is stuck in a condition where it can't break off what's its trying to do, the absence of any power interrupts the "loop ". Much like pulling the plug for a Desktop.

    Hope that answers your question.

    Regards - Charles

Charles, yes it does, I understand.

I've re-fitted the battery and have been able to start up the laptop without any problem, everything seems back to normal. I've taken note of your advice re: KB925902. You asked "Do you have the RealTek console installed?" In short I don't know. What is it and how can I tell? If I don't have it should I install it? If I do have it should I disable or uninstall?

I did say be patient at the outset

I don't have it - look in Add/Remove for RealTek.
    NO and NO :)

RealTek is a brand of Sound card. The Console manages options for it.

If you're interested in the hardware and other info about your laptop, use this program http://www.gtopala.com/

It is a execute and run, no need to install. Put it into a folder labeled SIW in Program Files. Any time you want to use it, either navigate to the folder and click on the .exe or create a short cut to it.

In the left panel, you'll see categories such as hardware specs and software installed.

The reason I asked: Most of the problems with the MS patch affected users with RealTek.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi alleycat,
Thanks for the compliment and you're quite welcome :)

If you do have RealTek, then there is a driver update and/or another MS patch that fixes the conflict with KB925902.

If you don't have it, just wait and see if MS comes up for a fix for non-RealTek problems.

    Regards - Charles

Boot your laptop from dos using a CD or floopy .And copy compbatt.sys from another computer to the " %systemroot%\system32\drivers\compbatt.sys ".
Then reboot .( Before you do this ,you'd better backup compbatt.sys to another logic disk in case failure.)

If this method can't solve the problem , run your laptop in safe mode .

Just back from an Easter break with my sister in the South of England .....

Good to see that you have managed to resolve the problem and are up and running again :)

Two points about the memory testers ....

Is the laptop set to boot from CD first? Often there is an option immediately after power up to change the boot order. On a desktop this is to be found in the BIOS.

I have only checked out the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool and this downloads as a CD image, a .iso file. Ths will not run directly but must be burnt to a CD to give an executable file. Instructions are given on the MS page, but in Nero 7 the command is Recorder > Burn Image.
