I have a single phone line connecting computer modem and phone using a two plug jack adapter. The answering machine is a digital recorder attached to the phone.

Is there a product somewhere that will plug into the single jack but split to allow use of the modem AND also allow, when I am on line, the phone to ring normally, i.e. not register a busy signal, so the answering machine will get messages?

We have limited income and do not want to pay for voice mail through the local phone company.

I checked a while ago and no, not on dialup. The line gives outside callers the engaged signal when you are connected.

I use voicemail (what our telco calls Messagebank), for my service it is free. See if the telco have various "rate plans ", you might be able to trade off something you use infrequently for a voicemail system.

I have a Mobile phone (you might call it a Cell phone), sitting next to the computer (always on the charger) and give the number to my family and friends for urgent calls. My three daughters have old phones to burn :D

Thanks for the prompt reply Matt. I also did some research and found that there are devices with ports for fax, modem, telephone and answering machine but they are mighty expensive. I also have a cell phone for important messages so I am covered much that same as you. Thanks again.

You may want to do a little reading on the V92 standard which has been around for quite a while. With the right modem, you won't need to try "splitting" your phone line. This may give you a solution.

Very interesting, thanks Rockster. I will be interested to see if my telco and modem can support it.
