It seems some computers will not boot back up after installing KB929338. If you are not experiencing the problem described in the update do not install it.

    Update for Windows XP (KB929338)
Typical download size: 725 KB , less than 1 minute

This is a reliability update. Install this update to improve the stability of computers running Windows XP. This update prevents some Stop 0x1a or Stop 0x0a errors. After you install this item, you will have to restart your computer.

Hmmm, I knew there was a reason I've been staring at that update in my system tray for the past week. :D Actually, I always wait a while for this very reason. Plus, just the description of it made me hesitant. My system is as stable as they come. Couldn't quite see why I'd need to stabilize it more. :D

Thanks for the heads up Whiskeyman. I'll put this update in the can I think. ;)

Hi Whiskeyman, Just saw your post and had a look in Control Panel > Add or Remove and I see KB929338 was automatically installed on 16/03/07. Everything is OK with me at the moment. I've had problems in the past when the update was disturbed during download or installation and when I check with Belarc, it will indicate need to reinstall update if this has happened. Neil.

    Neil,
to avoid downloading and installing in the background without you knowing about it:

Configure Windows Automatic Update to "notify of available updates but to do nothing more until you say so ".

With that setting, you have multiple choices. You can accept the updates and tell it to download and next, tell it to install. You can go to Windows Update and get them manually. You can go to Windows Update Catalog and download them to the local hard disk and install them whenever you choose. (A benefit of downloading and saving on the local hard disk is that when the time comes to reinstall or install a new system, all Windows Updates can be installed off line.) You can deselect updates that you don't want or don't need.

Hi Christer, Thanks for the advice, I seem to recall having done that about 4 months ago but I suspect after the major problem installing Norton I S 2007 when the Symantec Techo had remote control of my PC when getting rid of previous Norton programs, that the auto install updates was reinstated. Will have a go at your suggestions. Thanks. Neil.

Thanks Whiskeyman. And same here Zander, I've just been staring at the Install? download in the tray for a week, suspicious. It goes to the "Do not show again" pile. :)

I do not install "Optional" updates unless I know I need them and that has yet to happen. On the other hand, as a Ghost user, I install all "High Priority" updates without trepidation. If anything should go wrong, I start wondering which one it was ... ... while I go get my Ghost Boot Disks. I had no problems with KB929338 but I wonder why it was released as a "High Priority" update as opposed to an "Optional" update.

Don't know why it was High Pri vice Optional, but do know why this machine in the past had the "STOP 0x0000000a: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" errors. Because I was OC'ing to the hilt (2.9GHz & OC'd vidcard on a 2.4GHz rig). :p

My fix was to tone down the OC, haven't had the error in two years, so didn't install this "fix" for whatever particular cause it was designed for.

Plus the machine is a weee bit cooler now :)

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum. I have been having a problem with my computer since KB929338 and KB890830 were downloaded automatically. I now get a blue screen with the Stop error.

I can't seem to find these applications in the Add/Remove Programs though. Should I attempt to install them again since 929338 is supposely meant to fix Stop errors?

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Welcome to WinBBS :)

Bad news that it causes BSOD's to your computer.

Many many peeps have had trouble with those updates.

Windows XP? Try downloading the update manually via DownloadCenter:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...C4-E3A1-411A-9C9B-DC23923D09E7&displaylang=en

-*Save* the file to a folder, like "C:\Downloads" on your harddisk
Exit IE or FF browser. Do *not* execute it while online.

    - Start > Run. Type in (without the quotes):
    "C:\Downloads\WindowsXP-KB929338-x86-ENU.exe /o "

The parameter "/o" (o like OEM) could make it right again.
*BTW: "/o" is OEM Overwrite so careful, don't use it unless necessary.

    OR

If a restore will not cause too much data loss:
Restart, hit the F8 key right after BIOS and before Windows starts. You'll go to Safe Mode. Click Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore, then select a previous time when the computer worked right.

Then set Autoupdates to ask you before installing updates. "Hide" the updates you don't want, like these.

Thanks for the suggestion. Before I received your response, I actually tried reinstalling it from the MS site. That didn't help. I just tried it with the /o option and that didn't work as well. In case it's important, I have been doing this all from Safe Mode with Networking mode. My PC won't boot up in Normal Mode.

I had tried the System Restore previously, but no luck,

Any ideas on what I should try next? Are there regedits that need to be done here?

    Thanks,

    Twine

Those patch numbers are different than the patches that were installed on my computer. Does the program at the link also fix issues with KB929338 and KB890830?

Oops ...... got those KB numbers mixed up. Edited my previous post.

Set Windows to show hidden files and folders, then see if you have a folder named $NtUninstallKB929338$ in C:\WINDOWS\
If so, there should be a folder named spuninst within it that contains a file named spuninst.exe
Running that file should uninstall the update.

I did find the spuninst file, but uninstalling it didn't fix the problem either...

Any chance this is a hardware problem that coincidentally acted up at the same time as the MS updates?

Not sure how to proceed here....

I would like to gather some information from your computer about the files related to the update. Please download Ntk.zip from the following link.

    http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/Ntk.zip

Save it to the desktop, then extract the Ntk.bat file inside. Double click Ntk.bat to run it. It will locate all copies of a few files, along with information about those files, and open Ntk.txt when it completes. Please post the contents of Ntk.txt
