Not sure what happened but all of the sudden my Windows 2000 advanced server machine stopped allowing me to move files from one directory to another.

I tried cutting and pasting files and that didnt work either. I have never seen anything like this. I attempted to reinstall the OS and it didnt make a difference. I got all the latest updates too and still nothing.

I also did a virusscan and did not find anything.

If anyone can offer any ideas what it could be, it would be appreciated. I am close to fdisking the whole thing. I am stumped.

Whenever I drag a file from one location to a different one, my computer rebuilds the desktop and doesnt move the file.

I think I may be missing some DLLs because the windows installer trys to run intermittently without any reason and my outlook wont open any longer.

I tried to reinstall/uninstall Office pro and get app errors.

I recently ran Adaware and I think that may have something to do with it. When I get home I will see if I can restore a backup and see if that does the trick. Otherwise I am *******.

Any ideas on what else it could be?

Doubtful it would be caused by Ad-aware. That seems to be a very well-behaved program.

Did you leave system file protection turned on or did you disable it?

At this point and with your range of problems, I think I'd try a reinstall of SP2 and see if that helps. If not, since SP3 is now out, it might be worth a shot.

Also take a good look at your event logs to see if any hardware errors (mem, cpu, drive) are showing up.

If no hardware issues and unless it is a major effort (production server you have trouble doing without for a while or something), I think the idea of starting from a fresh install sounds pretty good. Some problems just ain't worth the time & effort to fix them.
