Hey, I'm at home, the stores are closed by now so I can't get a thing to get rid of CD scratches . I have a CD that I really need but It has a little scratch on it and the CD ROM doesn't pick like 2 files on it. Does anyone have "home remedies" for CD scratches...

Hey this could start a really long thread hehe I'd be proud if it would. :D

    Thanks

    How deep is the scratch?

In extreme cases with extremely badly scratched CDs I have been able to get some of the scratches out with automotive polishing comound. The stuff I used was eagle one wet, but I must caution you that this was a last ditch effort on a cd that was going in the trash otherwise. I wouldn't advise this if you can safely read the rest of the cd. It may render the entire cd unreadable.

THIS WAS A LAST DITCH EFFORT!!! :) :)

Its not that deep, and it's only a burnt CD. I just need something to hold up for now and I'll get a CD medic tomorow or something.

This is going to sound like a joke, and I didn't believe it myself when someone told it to me, but it really does work.

Rub your fingers along the sides of your nose, where the skin gets greasiest. Then rub this grease onto the scratches, and try your CD again.

Apparently skin oil has very nearly the same index of refraction as the plastic CDs are made out of.

Omg thats the funniest thing I've ever heard I'll try it though. That kinda sounds like the one about when you have a falling hard drive, you put it in the freezer and it will prolong its life. i didn't believe it either when I heard it. Anyway I'll try that, thanks.

    toothpaste....

really, if you rub some crest or colgate on the scratch it should take care of it. The scratch can't bee too deep though.
Don't use a whole lot of pressure, and you'll be good. Toothpaste is actually a mild abrasive and is also good for taking out those little rubber lines on your car windshield when your wiper blades rub too hard and leave a streak.

Cool Geeks what's up? Well as far as the nose goes never tried it. But I did read once in a popular science magazine, that if you take a cd that has been scratched, and giving you touble, try wiping it off with some armorall. Knowing how armorall works, I would have to say it is worth a shot. I would let it sort of dry a couple of minutes first. Let me know how it works. Good Luck!

    Thank You

Well, thank you very much everyone. I did the toothpaste thing and it worked so I guess I wont be spending 40 bucks on a CD Medic. Anyway, fell free to keep adding your suggestions; I was right, this did start something

Ordinary candle wax. Rub the candle on the CD, polish with a soft cloth. I've recovered many scratched ones this way, both commercial and CDR.
