Just recently, I have noticed when I click on the "send" button, it seems to take quite a long time to send the message - even if it is just a one sentence email. Two windows come up - one that says it is connecting to the outgoing server and one that says it is delivering the message - and they each stay up and trying to do their job for at least 5 seconds or more each. This didn't use to happen and the only thing I have changed is to show me a message to compact folders folders when it will save disk space.

Could this be causing the problem? Thanks.

It should not be caused by Thunderbird. Such behavior is, usually, associated with the ISP. I had this problem today with one of my aim.com addresses.
It sent pretty quickly, but it timed out writing to the sent folder.
It never happens with my ISP.

Thanks for the reply. This morning, things seem to be much better. I guess it was a problem with my outgoing email server. Thanks again.

Good! It is usually server based. And, it is, generally, ok the next day, or, even a few hours later, like it happened to me.
